Organization Overview
The Supportive Housing Network of New York represents more than 200 nonprofit organizations managing over 60,000 units of supportive housing across New York State. The Network’s mission is to sustain, expand, and improve supportive housing, a model that provides affordable housing with voluntary services for formerly homeless individuals with disabilities and other special needs. Through advocacy, public education, technical assistance, research, and policy analysis, the Network ensures that supportive housing continues to be a viable and effective solution to homelessness. By identifying and sharing best practices, the Network strengthens the sector and works toward the ultimate goal of ending homelessness for New Yorkers.
Position Overview
The Director of Development will serve as a senior leader in shaping and implementing the Network’s fundraising, membership engagement, and communications strategy. Reporting directly to the Executive Director and supervising the Fundraising Consultant, this hybrid role is based in New York City, with frequent travel within NYC and occasional statewide travel. The Director will combine strategic vision with hands-on execution, building relationships with donors, members, board members, government partners, and corporate stakeholders. This role is central to sustaining the Network’s financial health and advancing its mission.
Key Responsibilities
Fundraising & Events
- Develop and implement a strategic fundraising plan to achieve both short- and long-term financial goals.
- Build and manage a portfolio of major donors, identifying new prospects and cultivating high-value relationships.
- Lead fundraising campaigns, including year-end giving initiatives and Giving Tuesday.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director on donor recognition strategies, ensuring appreciation and engagement.
- Oversee grant proposals, letters of inquiry, budgets, and donor reports in coordination with staff.
- Lead internal Program and Fund Development meetings to communicate updates, deadlines, and deliverables.
- Supervise the Fundraising Consultant, providing guidance, weekly check-ins, and oversight of proposal submissions.
- Manage fundraising efforts for the Annual Conference and Gala, coordinating with committees, sponsors, venues, and event vendors, including program and media development.
- Support logistics for workshops and panels during conferences and special events.
Engagement & Communications
- Collaborate on the development of the Network’s three-year strategic plan, focusing on membership engagement, board involvement, and organizational vision.
- Assist in board preparation and governance processes, including nominations, interviews, selections, and onboarding.
- Lead creation of the Annual Report, highlighting the Network’s impact, membership, and financials.
- Work with staff and PR consultants to craft the Network’s narrative, increasing visibility and promoting its mission.
- Support social media strategy, website redesign, and external communications including newsletters, email campaigns, and donor correspondence.
- Attend key events, such as conferences, galas, openings, and groundbreakings, representing the Network.
- Promote DEIAB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility, and Belonging) initiatives within the organization and the broader supportive housing community.
Skills & Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to supportive housing and ending homelessness.
- 10+ years of experience in full-cycle donor acquisition, fundraising strategy, and event management.
- Ability to clearly communicate mission and fundraising goals to inspire donor support.
- Strong strategic thinking, organizational, and project management skills.
- Political savvy and interpersonal skills to cultivate relationships across multiple sectors.
- Experience with event logistics, press releases, annual reports, and social media metrics preferred.
- Highly detail-oriented, with excellent writing, research, and editing skills.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and travel as needed.
- Proficiency in MS Office; ability to learn Salesforce for donor management.
Compensation & Benefits
- Annual salary of $125,000.

- Flexible hybrid work schedule with in-office days typically on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
- Generous PTO and winter holiday office closure, with early office closing at 1 PM on Fridays.
