2026:UN Women Seeks Consultant on Artificial Intelligence and Gender-Responsive Statistical Leadership | Home-Based Consultancy

UN Women is seeking an experienced International Consultant to develop a training module on artificial intelligence (AI), institutional transformation and gender-responsive statistical leadership. The home-based consultancy offers an opportunity for an experienced professional to contribute to an international capacity-building initiative focused on gender statistics, AI readiness and institutional leadership.
The consultant will develop a self-contained, one-hour executive-level training module designed for senior statistical leaders. The assignment will explore how artificial intelligence and machine learning are changing the production, analysis and use of gender statistics while helping leaders understand the institutional decisions required for responsible and inclusive AI adoption.
The consultancy is home based, and the selected consultant is not expected to travel. Applications must be submitted by 18 September 2026 at 6:59 PM.
About UN Women
UN Women is the United Nations organization dedicated to advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women. It works with governments, civil society, partners and other stakeholders to support women’s rights and ensure that gender equality commitments are translated into action.
This consultancy forms part of the Making Every Woman and Girl Count (Women Count) programme in Asia and the Pacific. The programme aims to strengthen the production, use and promotion of gender statistics so that better data can inform policies and advocacy for gender equality.
The assignment will also support the Forging Pathways to Gender Equality in Statistical Leadership course, which seeks to identify and develop women leaders within national statistical offices and wider national statistical systems.
About the Consultant Role
The selected consultant will develop a practical training module that helps senior statistical leaders understand AI without requiring them to have advanced technical knowledge.
The module will introduce key concepts including artificial intelligence, machine learning and generative AI in plain language. It will explain how these technologies are increasingly being used in national statistical systems and how their adoption can affect institutional strategy, governance, workforce development, resources and accountability.
A major focus will be on gender-responsive institutional transformation. The consultant will help participants understand how AI can create opportunities while also presenting risks such as gender bias, unequal access to technology, privacy concerns, discrimination and reduced public trust.
The training will therefore help leaders consider how AI can be adopted responsibly while supporting gender equality and women’s leadership.
Key Responsibilities
The consultant will first work with UN Women teams to finalize the learning objectives, training approach, session structure and workplan.
The successful candidate will then develop the draft training content and supporting materials. These will include a PowerPoint presentation, syllabus, timed facilitator guide, participatory exercise, AI-readiness assessment and action-planning tool, leadership checklist and annotated resource list.
The module should be suitable for both remote and in-person delivery.
The consultant will also curate real-world examples from national statistical offices and national statistical systems. These cases should demonstrate successful applications of AI as well as situations where technology may create risks for gender equality, inclusion, human rights or public trust.
The final module should connect current regional and global initiatives with practical leadership decisions. This includes relevant work by the ESCAP Committee on Statistics, the Kigali City Group on AI Readiness for Official Statistics and the UN Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics.
Deliverables and Timeline
The consultancy has several key stages.
The first deliverable is an inception note covering the confirmed learning objectives, session run-of-show, content approach and workplan. This is due by 30 September 2026.
The draft module package, including the slide deck, syllabus, facilitator guide, exercises, AI-readiness tool, action-planning tool, leadership checklist and resource list, is expected by 15 October 2026.
The final package incorporating UN Women feedback is due by 15 November 2026.
The consultant will subsequently deliver the training module remotely, subject to confirmation, and participate in a debrief with UN Women. The training and any final improvements are expected between late November and mid-December 2026.
Required Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have an advanced degree in International Development, Social Sciences, International Relations, Gender Studies, Statistics, Mathematics, Econometrics, Computer Science or a related field.
A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted instead of an advanced degree.
At least seven years of professional experience in gender or inclusive statistics is required. Candidates should also have experience facilitating capacity-building activities or developing learning materials, resources or research related to gender statistics.
Experience teaching, communicating or building capacity on gender or inclusive statistical issues for different audiences, including government and international audiences, is required.
Experience conducting research on gender issues and a working understanding of AI, machine learning and large language models (LLMs) are highly desirable. Experience working with the UN System is an advantage, while experience leading teams of researchers is required.
Excellent English communication and writing skills are essential.
Core Competencies
UN Women is looking for a consultant who demonstrates integrity, professionalism and respect for diversity.
Core competencies include gender awareness and sensitivity, accountability, creative problem-solving, effective communication, inclusive collaboration, stakeholder engagement and leading by example.
Functional competencies include capacity-building skills related to gender statistics, knowledge of AI inclusivity issues and strong research and analytical skills, particularly in the area of gender statistics.
How to Apply
Interested candidates should submit their application through the UN Women Careers portal before 18 September 2026 at 6:59 PM.
Applicants are required to submit a cover letter of no more than one page. Shortlisted candidates may also be asked to provide links to previous work demonstrating relevant experience, particularly work related to gender and AI, gender data, professional training or executive-level capacity building.
Applicants should ensure that all sections of the online application form, including education and employment history, are fully completed, as incomplete applications may be disqualified.
