UN Women is inviting qualified gender equality and facilitation professionals to join its HeForShe Barbershop Facilitator Consultant Roster, an international opportunity designed to expand conversations around gender equality, equitable masculinities and social norms change.
The consultancy is home-based, part-time and ongoing, with facilitators deployed on an as-needed basis depending on programme demand, partner requests and available resources.

About the HeForShe Barbershop Initiative
The HeForShe Barbershop Toolkit is a participatory programme designed to engage men and boys in conversations about gender equality, equitable masculinities and social norms.
The approach is rooted in the Transforming Patriarchal Masculinities (TPM) methodology and provides a structured environment where participants can explore gender norms and consider how individuals and communities can contribute to more equitable societies.
As UN Women seeks to expand the initiative across different countries and languages, it is establishing a roster of qualified facilitators who can deliver Barbershop sessions and help adapt the programme to different local contexts.
What Is a Consultant Roster?
The roster is a pool of pre-vetted specialists who can be called upon when UN Women Headquarters, Regional Offices or Country Offices require relevant expertise.
Being included in the roster does not guarantee employment or future assignments.
Instead, consultants may be selected when there is a specific programme requirement, partner request or urgent assignment requiring qualified facilitation expertise.
Assignments can vary in duration, frequency and geographic location depending on programme needs.
Role of the Barbershop Facilitator
Selected facilitators will independently prepare and deliver contextualized Barbershop sessions in accordance with UN Women’s approved methodology, facilitation standards and implementation protocols.
Facilitators will work under the guidance of the Partnerships Engagement and Special Initiatives Advisor and Global Head of HeForShe, who will serve as the focal point for contractual and payment matters.
The role requires facilitators to maintain the core objectives and methodology of the Barbershop programme while adapting delivery to local circumstances.
Key Responsibilities
One of the first requirements for roster members is completing mandatory onboarding and orientation activities.
Facilitators must attend at least 80% of mandatory Barbershop Orientation and Coordination Webinars organized by UN Women.
They will also review the facilitation toolkit, safeguarding guidance and implementation framework while confirming their understanding of the curriculum and reporting requirements.
These onboarding webinars are not paid activities and are expected to take place during the first six months following roster onboarding.
Adapting Barbershop Sessions
Facilitators will be responsible for preparing materials that are appropriate for each specific setting.
This may involve adapting the standard curriculum to:
- Local languages
- Cultural contexts
- Participant profiles
- Literacy levels
- Partner requirements
- Local implementation conditions
Finalized adapted materials must be submitted at least seven working days before workshop delivery.
The facilitator will also coordinate with UN Women or the implementing partner to ensure that the session design and logistics are ready.
Delivering Barbershop Sessions
The core responsibility is facilitating sessions for groups of men and boys using the standardized Barbershop curriculum.
Facilitators will lead discussions around gender equality, equitable masculinities and social norms while maintaining the programme’s core learning objectives.
They will also be expected to create a safe, inclusive and respectful learning environment.
Facilitation techniques may be adapted according to group dynamics, provided that the core methodology and learning objectives are maintained.
Monitoring and Evaluation
Following workshops, facilitators will be responsible for submitting a structured monitoring and evaluation report.
The report must be aligned with the Barbershop M&E Framework and should document:
- Participant attendance.
- Participant engagement.
- Participant profiles.
- Key discussion themes.
- Session outcomes.
- Facilitation observations.
- Challenges encountered.
- Lessons learned.
- Recommendations for future sessions.
The report must be submitted within five working days after the workshop.
Community of Practice
Facilitators will also contribute to the wider Barbershop community of practice.
This includes sharing facilitation experiences, lessons learned and good practices through relevant platforms or debriefing sessions.
Consultants may also provide written contributions to strengthen guidance notes and facilitation materials.
They may be asked to provide testimonials and reflective statements that can potentially support UN Women’s communications and advocacy around the Barbershop initiative.
Where Will the Consultant Work?
The consultancy is primarily home-based and remote.
However, because facilitators may be deployed to support workshops in different locations, assignments can sometimes involve short-term in-person facilitation or field missions.
Travel requirements will be determined on a case-by-case basis depending on programme needs.
This means candidates should be comfortable with both remote preparation and, where required, in-person facilitation assignments.
Required Qualifications
Applicants should have a Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline.
Suitable fields include:
- Social Sciences
- Human Rights
- Gender or Women’s Studies
- International Development
- Related disciplines
A first-level university degree combined with an additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted instead of an advanced degree.
Candidates must also have a minimum of five years of work experience.
Most importantly, applicants need experience facilitating trainings, workshops or dialogue-based programmes focused on areas such as:
- Gender equality
- Male allyship
- Equitable masculinities
- Social norms change
Skills and Experience
Strong facilitation and interpersonal skills are central to the role.
Candidates should be able to manage group discussions, communicate effectively and navigate potentially sensitive conversations.
The successful facilitator should also demonstrate:
- Strong understanding of gender equality.

Language Requirements
Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
Fluency in an additional language is highly desirable, particularly where it can help the consultant adapt Barbershop materials and facilitation approaches to local or regional contexts.
Multilingual candidates may therefore be particularly well suited to supporting the programme’s expansion across different countries.

Assignments will depend on programme needs, available funding, partner requests and other operational considerations.
The frequency and duration of assignments can therefore vary.
