WINGS, a global leader in strengthening the philanthropy ecosystem, is currently seeking a dedicated Africa Coordinator to support its mission in Africa. WINGS connects and champions organizations to make giving more effective, ensuring philanthropy is well-resourced, supported, and capable of driving lasting, systemic change. With a global community of over 230 member organizations across more than 60 countries, WINGS is committed to building a more just, equitable, and sustainable world.
Through shared learning, collective action, and advocacy, WINGS empowers philanthropy to address global challenges and contribute meaningfully to the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Role Overview
The Africa Coordinator plays a pivotal role in implementing the WINGS 2023-2027 Strategic Plan, particularly Strategic Priority 1: nurturing networks and strengthening ecosystems. The Coordinator will support WINGS’ growing network in Africa, maintaining close proximity to members while facilitating their engagement in global initiatives.
Key objectives of this role include:
- Network Growth and Engagement
The Africa Coordinator will serve as a primary contact for WINGS members in the region. Responsibilities include:- Supporting efforts on philanthropy-enabling environments, policy advocacy, climate action, locally-led development, SDGs, knowledge management, and multi-stakeholder partnerships.
- Organizing and facilitating the Africa Working Group, a community of learning for members committed to strengthening philanthropy in Africa.
- Coordinating online and in-person events, fostering collaboration, and driving innovation and engagement strategies.
- Working closely with WINGS’ Network and Engagement team to recruit and onboard new members.
- Ensuring African members’ contributions are represented in global WINGS initiatives and cross-regional exchanges.
- Strengthening Philanthropy Support Ecosystems
WINGS aims to create stronger local ecosystems that empower philanthropic actors. The Africa Coordinator will:- Plan and coordinate activities to strengthen regional, national, and thematic philanthropy support ecosystems.
- Identify capacity-building needs in the sector and promote sustainable collaboration.
- Co-convene local and regional players, leveraging WINGS’ global network to connect stakeholders.
- Advancing WINGS’ Regional Mission
The Coordinator will contribute to WINGS’ overarching goals in Africa, including capacity building, knowledge production, communications, and resource acquisition.
Main Responsibilities
The Africa Coordinator will lead the implementation of the regional strategy through activities such as:
- Developing detailed project plans to track progress and execute regional initiatives.
- Strengthening understanding of key needs, challenges, and opportunities in the philanthropic sector.
- Coordinating all Africa Working Group activities.
- Designing webinars, online meetings, and in-person events connected to regional work.
- Preparing project proposals, reports, and fundraising initiatives to sustain WINGS’ efforts.
- Identifying partnerships to enhance regional programs.
- Coordinating knowledge production, including research, reports, joint documents, and declarations.
- Highlighting regional trends, innovations, and best practices in philanthropy.
- Ensuring projects are delivered on time, within scope, and within budget.
- Representing WINGS at conferences and regional forums.
Required Qualifications
Candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Based in an African country.
- Fluency in English and French; proficiency in other languages, especially Portuguese, is desirable.
- At least 7 years of professional experience, including project or network coordination in nonprofit organizations.
- Strong knowledge of the philanthropic sector and civil society in Africa.
- Experience in fundraising, including proposal writing for foundations.
- A global mindset with awareness of cultural and geographic diversity.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to build relationships and represent WINGS in relevant forums.
- Proficiency in computer and database systems.
- Relevant Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s or equivalent experience preferred.
- Ability to travel up to 15% of the time.
Compensation
The Africa Coordinator role is a consultant position, 40 hours per week. Compensation ranges from USD $30,000 to $40,000 annually, depending on geographic location and experience.
