Role Overview

The Business Development Associate is a critical execution role within the Development & Innovation team. Reporting to the Business Development Director, the Associate is responsible for driving prospect research, lead generation, proposal development, pipeline management, and CRM administration. This position functions as the operational backbone of the business development function, ensuring that opportunities are consistently tracked, pursued, and advanced. The role requires precision, accountability, and a proactive mindset to independently manage multiple concurrent workstreams while contributing to team objectives.


Key Responsibilities

1. Lead Generation, Prospecting, and Outreach

  • Independently research and identify funding prospects across corporations, foundations, bilaterals, multilaterals, high-net-worth individuals, and family offices.
  • Build, maintain, and expand a structured pipeline aligned with Village Capital’s strategic priorities.
  • Develop targeted prospect lists, briefs, and outreach sequences, including cold emails, follow-ups, and meeting preparation.
  • Identify high-fit, non-obvious funders and escalate qualified leads to leadership for relationship development.
  • Ensure consistency and rigor in pipeline management to maximize engagement and opportunity conversion.

2. Proposal and Concept Note Development

  • Draft and manage proposals and concept notes from initial RFP/CfP review to final submission, with minimal oversight.
  • Coordinate cross-functional inputs for complex submissions and ensure strict adherence to deadlines and formatting requirements.
  • Maintain and improve reusable proposal content and templates to increase efficiency, accuracy, and quality.
  • Ensure submissions are compelling, well-organized, and tailored to funders’ priorities.

3. Collateral Development and Communications Support

  • Develop high-quality, funder-facing materials, including one-pagers, presentation decks, briefing documents, and reusable templates.
  • Prepare background research and pipeline summaries to provide leadership with visibility into business development activity.
  • Maintain a library of ready-to-use content to streamline communications and proposal development.

4. HubSpot CRM Management and Pipeline Administration

  • Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and reliability of HubSpot records, logs, and pipeline stages.
  • Generate pipeline reports, activity summaries, and status updates for leadership.
  • Monitor stale records, data gaps, and pipeline anomalies to maintain actionable visibility.

5. Business Development Reporting and Team Support

  • Serve as the operational backbone of the team, enabling senior members to focus on strategic initiatives.
  • Support cross-functional coordination for proposals, funding renewals, and submission tracking.
  • Provide execution-level insights and pipeline visibility during team meetings and discussions.
  • Contribute to improving processes and operational efficiency within the business development function.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience in proposal development, grant writing, lead generation, or business development, ideally in consulting, international development, or complex nonprofit environments.
  • Proven ability to independently draft, edit, and submit high-quality proposals, concept notes, or similar submissions in response to RFPs or Calls for Proposals.
  • Strong secondary research skills, identifying non-obvious funding prospects through databases and desk research.
  • Experience building and managing pipelines, outreach lists, and structured databases.
  • Proficiency in HubSpot CRM or ability to quickly learn; disciplined CRM hygiene and real-time data management required.
  • Strong skills in document management, version control, and deadline tracking across multiple workstreams.
  • Familiarity with funding landscapes in foundations, corporates, bilaterals, and multilaterals relevant to international development or innovation ecosystems.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in international development, communications, business, public policy, or related fields.
  • Must be based in the United States, preferably in the Eastern Time zone.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary: $68,000–$74,000, depending on experience.
  • Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, as well as a 401(k) plan with 3% match.
