About the Role

The US Fossil Economy Campaigner will support campaigns aimed at reducing dependence on fossil fuels while challenging the expansion of petrochemical infrastructure and so-called “false climate solutions” that may worsen environmental injustice.

The role focuses on advancing policies and actions that protect frontline communities, public health, and ecosystems from the impacts of fossil fuel extraction and industrial pollution.

The successful candidate will work closely with environmental advocates, community organizations, policymakers, researchers, and coalition partners to drive meaningful change across key regions in the United States, including the Gulf Coast, Permian Basin, and Ohio River Valley.

Because the position involves collaboration with national and international partners, occasional domestic and international travel may be required.

Key Responsibilities

Campaigning and Advocacy

The campaigner will spend approximately half of their time supporting and implementing advocacy initiatives designed to achieve CIEL’s strategic objectives.

Key responsibilities include:

• Developing and supporting campaigns focused on petrochemicals, agrochemicals, and carbon capture infrastructure.
• Mobilizing diverse stakeholders and coalition partners.
• Supporting policy advocacy and administrative actions.
• Building strong relationships with environmental justice movements and partner organizations.
• Advancing strategies that promote climate solutions grounded in human rights and environmental protection.

Research and Public Education

The role also includes translating complex legal, scientific, and technical information into accessible materials for different audiences.

Responsibilities include:

• Developing educational and advocacy resources.
• Supporting research initiatives addressing knowledge gaps.
• Contributing to public awareness campaigns.
• Representing CIEL at conferences, public forums, and stakeholder meetings.

Project Management

The campaigner will coordinate a variety of activities to ensure campaigns remain effective and well-organized.

Tasks include:

• Managing campaign timelines and deliverables.
• Organizing meetings, workshops, and events.
• Coordinating communication across internal teams.
• Supporting collaboration among advocacy partners and stakeholders.
• Maintaining momentum on regional and national campaign priorities.

Administrative Support

Additional responsibilities include assisting with fundraising activities, maintaining project documentation, participating in staff meetings, and contributing to organizational planning efforts.

Who Should Apply?

CIEL is seeking candidates with at least three years of relevant experience in advocacy, campaigning, or environmental policy work.
