UNFCCC Hiring Remote Strategic Communications Specialist Consultant (18-Month Contract)

Help Shape Global Climate Communication and Youth Engagement
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is inviting applications for a Remote Strategic Communications Specialist Consultant within its Communications & Engagement Division.
This consultancy offers communications professionals the opportunity to support the COP 31 and COP 32 Presidency Youth Climate Champions (PYCCs) by developing strategic communications, managing digital engagement, and amplifying youth voices in global climate action.
The consultancy is expected to begin as soon as possible and will run for 18 months (August 2026 – November 2027), with work performed remotely and occasional international travel.
About the Consultancy
The consultant will help communicate the impact of meaningful youth participation in climate policy and strengthen awareness of the Presidency Youth Climate Champion initiative.
Working closely with the Action Empowerment Unit, the Digital Media team, and the COP 31 and COP 32 Presidency Youth Climate Champions, the consultant will create compelling communications that connect young people, policymakers, and stakeholders across the global climate community.
Key Responsibilities
The successful consultant will:
- Develop strategic communication plans for the Presidency Youth Climate Champions.
- Produce high-quality multimedia content for diverse audiences.
- Create compelling stories that highlight youth-led climate action.
- Translate technical climate policy into engaging communication products.
- Manage social media strategies and messaging.
- Coordinate content production across partners and communications teams.
- Draft speeches, briefing notes, talking points, opinion articles, and other communication materials.
- Provide real-time editorial and communications support during climate events.
- Ensure consistent messaging across COP 31 and COP 32 communications.
Focus on Youth Climate Leadership
One of the consultancy’s primary objectives is to elevate the voices of children and young people participating in climate action.
The consultant will help:
- Showcase youth innovations driving climate solutions.
- Promote meaningful youth participation in international climate negotiations.
- Strengthen awareness of the Presidency Youth Climate Champion’s role.
- Support storytelling from young climate leaders, including those from rural communities.
- Build narratives that inspire greater engagement in global climate policy.
Who Should Apply?
UNFCCC is seeking communications professionals with extensive experience in strategic storytelling and digital engagement.
Applicants should have:
- A university degree in journalism, communications, international relations, political economy, or a related discipline.
- At least five years of professional experience in journalism or strategic communications.
- Experience writing articles, speeches, scripts, press materials, and multimedia content.
- Strong digital communications and social media management skills.
- Excellent editorial, research, analytical, and fact-checking abilities.
- Experience producing communications for policy or institutional audiences.
Experience working with international organisations or within the United Nations system is desirable, while supporting communications for a public figure is considered an added advantage.
