The organisation is seeking a Treasurer to join its Board of Trustees and provide strategic oversight of its financial health, sustainability and regulatory compliance.

Refugee Biriyani & Bananas is a female- and community-led grassroots organisation working alongside people affected by displacement, war, conflict, injustice and instability. Its programmes span Greece, Gaza and Cairo, combining direct humanitarian support with advocacy and awareness-raising.
RBB is a growing UK-registered charity with Charity Commission number 1189561. For the financial year ending 31 March 2025, the organisation reported £423,041 in total income and £373,007 in total expenditure. As its income exceeds £250,000, RBB prepares annual accounts in accordance with the Charities Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) and undergoes independent examination.
Key Details of the Treasurer Role
The Treasurer will be a key member of the Board of Trustees, working alongside the Chair, CEO, other trustees and team members to provide financial oversight and strategic advice.
The role requires approximately six to eight hours per month. Board meetings take place approximately every 12 weeks via video call, with opportunities for in-person gatherings during the year. Additional meetings may occasionally be required depending on organisational needs.
Importantly, this is a voluntary and unpaid Trustee position. Reasonable travel and out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed according to the organisation’s volunteer policy.
Trustees are appointed for an initial three-year period, after which they may be eligible for reappointment.
What Will the Treasurer Do?
The Treasurer will oversee the management and reporting of the charity’s finances while helping the Board make informed strategic decisions.
Key responsibilities include overseeing the annual budget and cash-flow forecasts, supporting fundraising and financial planning, advising on financial and regulatory matters, and helping develop and monitor financial policies.
The Treasurer will also advise trustees on fund management and reserves, regularly report on the charity’s financial position, and recommend action where necessary.
Other responsibilities include overseeing financial processes such as Gift Aid claims and payroll, supporting appropriate segregation of financial duties, monitoring financial risks and international financial compliance, and ensuring effective internal controls.
The Treasurer will review financial transactions using Xero accounting software, work with professional financial advisers and lead trustee liaison with the independent examiner. They will also oversee the preparation and Board approval of the charity’s annual accounts and report.
Who Should Apply?
This opportunity is aimed at individuals with sound financial knowledge who can explain financial information clearly and contribute strategically at Board level.
Essential requirements include an understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship, support for RBB’s values and mission, and familiarity with the Charities SORP or a willingness to develop this knowledge.
Candidates should also have proven ability to communicate financial information and experience using Xero accounting software.
A formal accountancy qualification is desirable. RBB is particularly interested in candidates with experience managing finances, payroll and the financial needs of smaller organisations. Previous voluntary-sector, Treasurer or Trustee experience would also be advantageous.
Senior strategic management and leadership experience, strong analytical skills and competent IT skills are additional desirable qualities.
