Role Overview: UX Team Lead
The UX Team Lead position is a senior design leadership role responsible for guiding and growing The Tor Project’s UX and product design team. This individual will play a key role in shaping the user experience across multiple platforms and products, ensuring that design decisions reflect usability, accessibility, and privacy-first principles.
The role combines strategic leadership, team management, and hands-on design work. The UX Team Lead will collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, communications teams, and organizational leadership to ensure a unified, user-centered approach to product development.

Key Responsibilities

Ideal Candidate Profile
The Tor Project is looking for an experienced UX professional with both strong leadership capabilities and deep technical design expertise.
Candidates are expected to have:
- At least 7+ years of experience in UX, product design, or interaction design
- A minimum of 3+ years managing or leading design teams
- Experience working on complex digital products or platforms
- Strong skills in systems thinking and user-centered problem solving
- Experience contributing to or maintaining design systems
- Proficiency with modern design tools such as Figma
- Strong understanding of accessibility, usability, and responsive design principles
- Experience working in distributed, cross-functional teams
Additional valuable experience includes work in open-source environments, civic technology, privacy and security-focused projects, or designing for global and multilingual audiences. Familiarity with frontend technologies such as Android Material Design and web constraints is also highly desirable.
Compensation and Benefits
This full-time remote position offers a competitive salary range of $110,000 to $121,275 USD, with compensation determined based on experience and qualifications.
