Tech Policy Press Fellowship 2027: Remote Fellowship with $10,000 Stipend | Apply by September 24, 2026

Professionals interested in technology policy, journalism, research, democracy and digital rights can apply for the Tech Policy Press Fellowship 2027, a year-long remote opportunity offering a US$10,000 stipend. The fellowship is designed for mid-career journalists, researchers, lawyers, policy professionals, analysts and governance specialists who want to explore important questions about the impact of technology on society and democracy.

The programme is open to applicants from around the world and particularly encourages applications from people and communities that remain underrepresented in global technology policy discussions. Applications must be submitted by September 24, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. EDT.

About the Tech Policy Press Fellowship 2027

The Tech Policy Press Fellowship supports professionals developing independent public-interest work at the intersection of technology, democracy and governance. Since its launch, the programme has brought together fellows from different countries and professional backgrounds to examine issues such as artificial intelligence governance, digital rights, surveillance, technology regulation, platform accountability and the relationship between governments and technology companies.

For the 2027 fellowship, applicants are expected to propose a clearly defined area of focus. Rather than following a predetermined research agenda, fellows will have the opportunity to develop projects that reflect their expertise and interests while addressing urgent technology-policy questions.

Projects may take different forms, including investigative journalism, policy analysis, essays, newsletters, podcasts and data-driven journalism.

$10,000 Stipend and Fellowship Benefits

Successful fellows will receive a US$10,000 stipend, paid quarterly throughout the 12-month fellowship period.

Beyond financial support, the fellowship provides professional and editorial opportunities that can help participants strengthen their work and visibility in the technology policy field.

Benefits include ongoing editorial guidance, participation in an international cohort and monthly sessions for feedback and exchange of ideas. Fellows will also have opportunities to connect with experts working in technology policy and related areas.

Selected work may be published through the organisation’s website, newsletter, podcast and special events, giving fellows an opportunity to reach an international audience.

Who Can Apply?

The fellowship is intended primarily for mid-career professionals with demonstrated expertise in technology policy or a closely related area.

Potential applicants include:

  • Journalists and public-interest reporters
  • Researchers and academics
  • Lawyers
  • Public policy professionals
  • Policy analysts
  • Governance specialists

Applicants should have a strong understanding of a particular technology-policy issue, geographic region or broader area concerning technology’s influence on democracy, governance or society.

International applicants are encouraged to apply, including professionals from the Global Majority and historically underrepresented communities in media and technology policy.

Remote Fellowship Requirements

The Tech Policy Press Fellowship is conducted fully remotely, making it accessible to professionals based in different parts of the world. Fellows will work as independent contractors for the duration of the programme.

Participants will be expected to publish at least one analysis or reporting piece each month. They must also attend a mandatory one-hour monthly cohort meeting and participate in monthly editorial check-ins.

Fellows will work with the editorial team and other participants where appropriate, meet agreed publication deadlines and disclose any potential conflicts of interest.

Although fellows may respond to emerging developments during the programme, they are expected to begin with a clearly defined thematic focus for their fellowship.

Application Requirements

Applicants must complete the official online application before the deadline. The application package should include a CV or resume, a cover letter of no more than two pages explaining the proposed fellowship project, links to published work from the past three years and two professional references.

Writing samples must be publicly available online and clearly attributed to the applicant. Social media posts, unpublished dissertations and class assignments are not accepted as eligible writing samples.

Applicants should therefore prepare their materials carefully and ensure that their proposed project demonstrates clear relevance to technology policy, democracy, governance or public interest.

Fellowship Timeline

The application deadline is September 24, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. EDT. Information sessions are also being offered to prospective applicants, with sessions scheduled for September 9 and September 16, 2026.

Shortlisted applicants may be invited to an online interview, while application decisions are expected to be communicated by early December 2026.

The fellowship is scheduled to begin in January 2027 and will run for 12 months.
