About the Sexual Violence Research Initiative

The Sexual Violence Research Initiative is a global network focused on advancing research addressing violence against women (VAW), violence against children (VAC) and other forms of violence driven by gender inequality.

The organisation brings together researchers, practitioners, activists, funders and other stakeholders working toward a world free from violence against women and children.

SVRI focuses particularly on low- and middle-income countries and supports knowledge sharing, research dissemination, capacity strengthening, partnerships and evidence-based approaches to prevention and response.

The Communications Manager will play a key role in strengthening SVRI’s visibility and ensuring research, knowledge and programme outcomes reach the audiences that need them.

About the Communications Manager Role

The successful candidate will help develop and implement an integrated communications strategy across SVRI’s four main areas of work.

The position will involve creating innovative ways to communicate SVRI’s work and impact while supporting advocacy and knowledge translation.

The Communications Manager will work closely with colleagues to transform research and evidence into accessible communications that can influence policy, practice, funding and wider discussions around violence against women and children.

This is a strategic and hands-on communications position combining digital communications, social media, website management, content creation, research translation, branding, multimedia production and communications strategy.

Key Responsibilities

The Communications Manager will oversee communications activities across SVRI projects, including research dissemination, capacity-building initiatives, online courses, events, grant-partner achievements and lessons learned.

A major responsibility will be managing SVRI’s three primary communication channels:

  • Social media
  • Website
  • SVRI newsletter

The successful candidate will develop social media plans, create engaging posts, design social media graphics and tiles, write captions, monitor performance and encourage audience engagement.

They will also analyse social media results and make improvements based on performance data.

Website and Newsletter Management

The Communications Manager will manage and improve SVRI’s website, including uploading content and supporting design, navigation and accessibility.

The role also requires applying search engine optimisation (SEO) principles to improve the visibility and reach of website content.

Another responsibility will be helping create, edit and review SVRI’s weekly newsletter, SVRI Update, while implementing email marketing strategies to improve engagement.

Experience with platforms such as WordPress and Mailchimp will therefore be particularly valuable.

Content and Multimedia Production

The successful candidate will develop and package multimedia materials across SVRI’s four areas of work.

This includes showcasing research and evidence produced by grant partners, sharing tools and learning resources, promoting academic and professional partnerships, and communicating initiatives that can influence funding and policy.

The Communications Manager may work on a wide range of content, including:

  • Reports
  • Blogs
  • Social media posts
  • Press releases
  • Podcasts
  • Reels
  • Images
  • Videos
  • Presentations
  • Digital campaigns
  • Website content

The role requires strong attention to visual consistency, branding and quality across all communication materials.

Communications Strategy and Knowledge Translation

The position will also involve developing communications strategies for specific projects.

The Communications Manager will identify appropriate audiences, communication channels and dissemination methods to ensure important research findings and project outputs reach their intended audiences.

A particularly important component is knowledge translation.

The successful candidate must be able to take scientific and peer-reviewed research and turn it into clear, accessible messages suitable for different audiences and communication platforms.

This ability will be essential for helping research influence policy, practice and wider public discussions.

Monitoring and Evaluation

The Communications Manager will develop a monitoring and evaluation plan for SVRI’s communication channels.

The plan should connect communications performance with the organisation’s broader monitoring, evaluation and learning system.

The successful candidate will therefore need to track communications outcomes and use data to evaluate the effectiveness of the SVRI Communications Strategy.
