Role Overview: General Surgeon

The UK-Med General Surgeon Register is designed for professionals who can deliver surgical care under challenging conditions. Candidates must be prepared to deploy internationally at short notice for a minimum of 3 weeks, with longer availability (4–6+ weeks) highly desirable.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing general and trauma surgical cases in humanitarian and stable environments
  • Performing a broad spectrum of surgical procedures, including general, trauma, plastic, and reconstructive surgery
  • Providing care for both adult and pediatric patients
  • Supporting emergency medical programs in varied international contexts, including Ukraine and other locations
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure high-quality patient care
  • Contributing to continuous learning, mentoring, and capacity building within the team

Requirements and Qualifications

Candidates should meet the following criteria:

  • Full surgical licensure and registration with the appropriate professional body
  • Medical degree with specialized surgical training
  • Experience managing complex patients and a variety of surgical conditions
  • Prior professional experience in low-resource, humanitarian, or conflict settings is essential
  • Availability for international deployment at short notice
  • Strong adaptability, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in challenging environments
  • Compassion, high performance, and commitment to continuous professional development
  • Language skills are an advantage

Deployment and Commitment

  • Hours: Full-time, with some weekend and evening work required
  • Duration: Minimum 3 weeks; longer deployments of 4–6+ weeks are highly desirable
  • Locations: International, depending on UK-Med response needs
