The Access to Nutrition Initiative (ATNi) is seeking an experienced Environmental Impact Assessment Consultant to support the environmental component of its forthcoming Global Index. Recognizing that food production affects both human health and the environment, ATNi is expanding its Global Index to evaluate not only the nutritional quality of food products but also their environmental impact. The new environmental assessment will examine how leading food and beverage manufacturers contribute to sustainable food systems while identifying opportunities for improvement.

Purpose of the Consultancy

The Environmental Impact Assessment Consultant will lead the environmental analysis component of ATNi’s pilot assessment. Working closely with the organization’s Data and Research team, the consultant will apply an existing environmental impact model to evaluate food products across five key environmental indicators.

The assignment will involve preparing product data, conducting environmental modelling, interpreting results, and producing technical documentation and visualizations that support the publication of ATNi’s 2027 Global Index.

The pilot will assess product portfolios from 10–15 food and beverage manufacturers operating in Indonesia and the United Kingdom, generating comparable sustainability scores that complement ATNi’s existing nutrition profiling work.

Key Responsibilities

The consultant will manage the environmental assessment from data preparation through final reporting.

Primary responsibilities include:

• Reviewing the selected environmental impact model and supporting datasets.
• Conducting a feasibility assessment and testing the model using sample product data.
• Cleaning, harmonizing, and preparing nutritional and ingredient datasets.
• Classifying food products using machine learning approaches, including random forest and neural network models.
• Validating product classifications to ensure data quality.
• Conducting environmental impact calculations using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data.
• Assessing five environmental impact categories:
  • Greenhouse gas emissions
  • Land use
  • Water stress
  • Eutrophication
  • Biodiversity
• Generating environmental scores that can be integrated with nutrition profiling results.
• Developing clear visualizations and evidence-based insights.
• Preparing technical methodology documentation and reproducible datasets.
• Presenting interim and final findings to ATNi’s research team.

The successful consultant will combine advanced technical analysis with the ability to communicate complex findings in an accessible and actionable manner.

Expected Deliverables

Throughout the project, the consultant will produce several important outputs, including:

• Feasibility and research planning memo.
• Cleaned and standardized product datasets.
• Product classification outputs.
• Interim findings presentation.
• Comprehensive final analytical report.
• Environmental data visualizations.
• Technical methodology document.
• Final presentation to the project team.
• Raw and processed datasets suitable for future analysis.

These deliverables will contribute directly to the environmental chapter of ATNi’s 2027 Global Index and help establish a foundation for future large-scale sustainability assessments.

Qualifications and Experience

ATNi is seeking a consultant with strong technical expertise in environmental modelling, sustainability research, and quantitative data analysis.

Applicants should possess:

• A higher-level degree in sustainability, nutrition, public health, data science, or a related discipline.
• Experience conducting environmental impact assessments using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies.
• Experience in food systems, nutrition, or sustainability research.
• Strong quantitative modelling and data analysis skills.
• Advanced proficiency in both R and Python.
• Experience managing complex datasets and statistical modelling.
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
• Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and diverse stakeholders.
