WMO Consultancy 2026: Remote Severe Weather Forecasting Opportunity in Central Africa

The World Meteorological Organization is currently recruiting for a high-level remote consultancy focused on strengthening severe weather forecasting systems across Central Africa. The consultancy, titled “Integration of MISVA Products, Training and Capacity Development for Severe Weather Forecasting in Central Africa”, offers experienced meteorology professionals an opportunity to contribute to international climate resilience, forecasting innovation, and regional early warning systems.
This consultancy is part of the Severe Weather Forecasting Programme (SWFP) supported through the CREWS Central Africa initiative. The project aims to improve forecasting capabilities within the region by strengthening the operational systems of the Regional Forecast Support Centre (RFSC) in Yaoundé and supporting National Meteorological Services (NMSs) across Central African countries.
The role is entirely home-based, making it suitable for international consultants with strong experience in operational meteorology, tropical forecasting, and climate-related training.
About the Consultancy
The consultant will work closely with the future Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre (RMSC) Yaoundé and the Central Africa Climate Application and Forecasting Center (CAPC-AC). The assignment focuses on integrating MISVA products into operational forecasting systems and improving forecasting methodologies related to severe weather and intraseasonal variability.
MISVA (Monitoring and Forecast of IntraSeasonal VAriability) products help meteorological centres monitor and predict atmospheric variability patterns that influence severe weather conditions. Their integration into regional forecasting systems is expected to significantly strengthen preparedness and disaster risk reduction efforts in Central Africa.
The consultancy combines technical forecasting work with training and capacity development responsibilities. The selected expert will support meteorological institutions in improving forecast production, operational guidance systems, and regional collaboration.
Main Responsibilities
The consultant will be responsible for several critical activities throughout the assignment period.
1. Integration of MISVA Products
The consultant will support the operational integration of MISVA forecasting products into existing severe weather forecasting workflows. This includes adapting selected products for the Central Africa domain and ensuring that forecasters can effectively use them within daily operational forecasting systems.
The work will contribute to improving seamless prediction approaches that combine short-term forecasting with longer-range climate signals.
2. Training and Capacity Development
A major component of the consultancy involves delivering technical training for regional forecasting teams and National Meteorological Services across Central Africa.
Training activities will focus on:
- Exploitation of MISVA products
- Synoptic-scale weather forecasting
- Regional severe weather prediction
- Production of operational weather bulletins
- Forecast guidance methodologies
The consultant will also develop pedagogical and technical training materials that can continue to support regional forecasters beyond the consultancy period.
3. Online Technical Briefings
The selected consultant will organize and conduct online briefings and forecasting sessions for meteorological professionals in the region. These virtual engagements are intended to strengthen regional collaboration and improve the interpretation of severe weather guidance products.
The briefings will support operational forecasters in applying advanced forecasting techniques to real-world weather situations affecting Central Africa.
Expected Deliverables
The consultancy includes several important deliverables, including:
- Development and operationalization of MISVA products for the Central Africa region
- Delivery of training workshops and technical forecasting sessions
- Preparation of training materials and forecasting resources
- Submission of a mission report summarizing activities, achievements, and recommendations
The consultant’s work is expected to contribute directly to improving severe weather preparedness and forecasting accuracy across the region.
Qualifications and Experience Required
Applicants should possess an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in:
- Meteorology
- Atmospheric Science
- Climate Science
- Or a related technical field
Candidates must also demonstrate:
- At least 10 years of professional experience in operational forecasting and tropical meteorology
- Strong familiarity with MISVA systems and products
- Experience delivering forecasting training and technical workshops
- Ability to produce scientific and technical reports
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
Because the role supports multiple countries and institutions, experience working in international or multicultural environments is considered highly valuable.
Language Requirements
Excellent written and spoken English and French are required for this consultancy. Since the assignment supports countries across Central Africa, bilingual communication skills are essential for training delivery and stakeholder coordination.
Contract Duration and Compensation
The consultancy will run over a six-month period with approximately 20 working days allocated during the assignment.
The compensation falls within WMO Pay Band D, with a daily rate ranging from:
- USD 620 to USD 750 per day

Remote Work and International Collaboration
