Are you interested in social media, digital communications, humanitarian affairs, and international development? A new Social Media Intern opportunity with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) offers students and recent graduates the chance to gain practical experience supporting humanitarian communications and digital campaigns.

The Social Media Intern position was posted on 9 September 2026, with applications closing on 17 September 2026. The internship is located within the Office of the Director of the Financing and Outreach Division in OCHA in New York and offers several working modalities, including full-time, part-time, remote, hybrid, and in-person arrangements.

About the Opportunity

OCHA is responsible for bringing together humanitarian organizations and supporting coordinated responses to emergencies. Its work includes mobilizing and coordinating humanitarian action, advocating for people affected by crises, promoting preparedness and prevention, and supporting sustainable solutions.

The internship sits within the Financing and Outreach Division, which manages relationships with key partners, supports fundraising for crisis response, manages humanitarian pooled funds, and works on communication, advocacy, and innovation in humanitarian finance.

The intern will work under the guidance of the Director of the division and day-to-day supervision of a Programme Management Officer.

Social Media and Campaign Responsibilities

The successful intern will support social media campaign planning, development, and implementation for the Director’s X and LinkedIn accounts.

Responsibilities will include conducting research and helping create impact stories, assisting with campaigns linked to flagship events and missions, and drafting content designed to encourage social media engagement.

This makes the opportunity particularly relevant for students and graduates interested in social media management, digital storytelling, communications, public relations, and humanitarian advocacy.

Design and Multimedia Work

The internship also provides exposure to digital design and multimedia communications.

The intern may be involved in creating clear and engaging graphic communications for social media. This can include branded promotional materials, digital and social media graphics, posters, flyers, and other marketing materials.

The role also involves supporting image selection for public dissemination and providing metadata for captioning and archiving. Interns may assist with organizing the clearance, production, and distribution of social media materials, as well as conducting photo and graphic research.

These responsibilities can help candidates develop practical skills in digital content creation, visual communication, social media design, and multimedia research.

Social Media Monitoring and Analytics

Another important component of the internship is social media monitoring.

The intern will research, monitor, and record media impact and recognition content relating to the Director. They will also research and update monitoring lists and explore social media analytics, trends, and tools.

The position also supports the advancement of the Director’s Social Media Strategy, including research into evolving platforms, community growth, and digital communication guidance.

This makes the internship suitable for candidates who want to build experience not only in content creation but also in social media analytics, audience growth, digital strategy, and communications research.

Qualifications and Eligibility

Applicants must meet one of the UN Internship Programme’s academic requirements. They must either be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school programme, or be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme equivalent to at least a bachelor’s degree.

Professional work experience is not required for the UN Internship Programme. However, applicants should have a field of study closely related to the internship.

Previous experience in social media and experience in a private or public-sector setting are desirable. Strong written and verbal English communication skills are also desirable, particularly the ability to draft social media content, articles, and videos.

Language Requirements

Fluency in English, including understanding, reading, speaking, and writing, is required. French is also one of the UN’s official working languages, while knowledge of another UN official language is considered an advantage.

Important Internship Information

This is an unpaid internship. Interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses, or these costs may be covered by their sponsoring institutions.

Candidates who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship takes place may need appropriate visa and work authorization. Successful candidates are advised to discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting an offer.
