UNEP Science Communications Specialist: Remote 12-Month Consultancy | Apply by October 01, 2026

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) is seeking an experienced Science Communications Specialist to support its global work on methane emissions, climate science, data products, research campaigns, and the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS).

This is a fully remote, full-time consultancy opportunity for 12 months. The position is suitable for an experienced communications, journalism, or content professional who can turn complex scientific and technical information into clear, engaging communications for international audiences.

Applications must be submitted by October 1, 2026.

About UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory

The International Methane Emissions Observatory is a data-driven initiative of UNEP focused on accelerating reductions in methane emissions.

Methane is a major contributor to climate change, making reductions in methane emissions an important opportunity for near-term climate action. IMEO brings together information from multiple sources to provide reliable and actionable data that can support global efforts to reduce emissions.

Its work draws on data from methane-detecting satellites, scientific measurement studies, industry reporting through the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0, and national emissions inventories.

About the Science Communications Specialist Role

The Science Communications Specialist will help increase the visibility, understanding, and impact of IMEO’s scientific work.

The successful consultant will develop communications strategies and content covering methane science studies, MARS, data products, scientific publications, research campaigns, events, and stakeholder engagements.

The role requires someone who can understand complex scientific information and communicate it effectively to different audiences. The consultant will report to the Head of IMEO and work within an international, fast-paced, and results-oriented environment.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will develop and implement communications plans supporting IMEO’s workstreams. This will include creating messaging frameworks for MARS, scientific studies, data products, and publications.

The consultant will also prepare messaging, speaking points, and communications materials for media interviews, education, and outreach activities while ensuring that communications remain aligned with UNEP and IMEO’s branding and messaging.

Content development will be another major part of the role. The specialist will write, edit, and proofread blogs, press releases, video scripts, speeches, factsheets, reports, web content, and other communications materials.

The role will also involve developing compelling stories from scientific research and data, supporting multimedia content, creating video scripts and storyboards, sourcing relevant visual assets, and coordinating updates to websites and digital platforms.

For events and stakeholder engagements, the consultant will prepare agendas, speaker briefs, presentations, promotional materials, multimedia assets, and follow-up communications.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should have a first-level university degree, such as a Bachelor’s degree, in Communications, Journalism, Social Sciences, Humanities, or a related discipline.

Candidates should also have at least six years of professional experience in communications, content strategy, journalism, or a related field.

Experience in climate, energy, environmental, or science communications is highly desirable.

Strong writing and editing skills are essential. Applicants should be able to translate complex scientific or technical subjects into clear and concise messages for non-specialist audiences.

The successful candidate should also demonstrate strong project management and organisational skills, the ability to collaborate with subject-matter experts, and the capacity to work under tight deadlines while managing competing priorities.

Additional Skills

Experience with Google Analytics, communications KPIs, email marketing platforms, conversion metrics, and digital engagement measurement would be an advantage.

Knowledge of science, climate, environmental, or energy communications will also strengthen an application.

English is the working language of UNEP’s IMEO, and candidates must demonstrate fluency in both written and spoken English. Knowledge of additional languages is considered an asset.
