About CLARIFI

The Community Land Rights and Conservation Finance Initiative (CLARIFI) was launched by RRI and Campaign for Nature in 2022 to help address the significant financing gap faced by Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and Afro-descendant Peoples.

The initiative provides direct funding and technical assistance to community-led organizations working on conservation, climate resilience, biodiversity protection, and land rights.

CLARIFI supports grants ranging from US$100,000 to US$1 million and facilitates larger investments between US$1 million and US$50 million to strengthen community-driven environmental and development solutions.

Position Overview

RRI is seeking a qualified consultant to serve as the CLARIFI Grantmaking Facilitator for Africa.

The consultant will work under the supervision of the Africa Program Director while collaborating closely with the CLARIFI Director and broader regional teams.

Key Responsibilities

The role is divided into two primary components: CLARIFI grantmaking activities and support for RRI’s Africa Regional Program.

CLARIFI Grantmaking Activities (80%)

Project Identification and Selection

The consultant will:

• Identify potential projects across Sub-Saharan Africa.
• Assess community needs and funding opportunities.
• Support project pipeline development.
• Participate in project selection processes.

Proposal Development and Capacity Building

Responsibilities include:

• Supporting applicants during concept and proposal development.
• Assessing organizational readiness and capacity.
• Providing guidance on project design and budgeting.
• Reviewing proposals and strengthening project quality.

Grant Implementation Support

The facilitator will:

• Assist approved grantees throughout implementation.
• Monitor progress and reporting requirements.
• Provide technical support and mentorship.
• Conduct stakeholder engagement and field visits where necessary.

Learning and Knowledge Sharing

Additional responsibilities include:

• Participating in learning events and workshops.
• Supporting strategic planning processes.
• Documenting lessons learned and emerging opportunities.

Africa Regional Program Support (20%)

The consultant will also contribute to broader regional initiatives by:

• Supporting implementation of RRI’s Africa Regional Strategy.
• Promoting collaboration among partners and stakeholders.
• Engaging with governments, NGOs, and civil society actors.
• Contributing expertise on land rights, forest governance, conservation, and climate issues.
• Supporting monitoring, evaluation, and regional learning processes.

Deliverables

The selected consultant will provide monthly technical reports covering:

• Status of proposals and active grants.
• Progress toward project objectives.
• Risks and implementation challenges.
• Strategic recommendations.
• Lessons learned and opportunities for improvement.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must possess substantial experience working with community-based organizations and development initiatives in Africa.

Minimum requirements include:

• Residence in Sub-Saharan Africa with legal authorization to work.
• At least seven years of experience in project development and facilitation.
• Seven years of experience supporting Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendant Peoples, or local communities.
• Expertise in land rights, forest governance, biodiversity, climate change, or community development.
• Professional fluency in English and French.
• Strong writing and reporting skills in both languages.
• Ability to travel regionally and internationally when required.
• Experience working effectively in virtual and multicultural environments.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates who have:

• Residence in a Francophone African country.
• Spanish language skills.
• Academic qualifications in international development, environmental studies, social sciences, or related fields.
• Experience with NGOs, donors, and government institutions.
• Grantmaking and monitoring experience.
• Capacity-building expertise with civil society organizations.

Compensation and Benefits

The consultancy offers:

• Fees of up to US$20 per hour.
• Approximately 15 working days per month.
• Flexible remote work arrangements.
• Potential contract renewal opportunities.

In addition, RRI will directly cover approved travel expenses, including:

• International flights.
• Domestic travel.
• Accommodation during approved assignments.

Eligible expenses such as meals, local transportation, and incidentals will be reimbursed upon submission of receipts.
