About the Opportunity

The Disaster Risk Management Specialist will serve as the principal focal point for disaster risk management across iMMAP’s global operations. The consultant will provide strategic leadership, technical guidance, and coordination support to strengthen disaster preparedness, response, recovery, resilience, and anticipatory action initiatives.

This role is designed for professionals who possess a strong understanding of disaster risk reduction, geospatial technologies, information management systems, and humanitarian coordination mechanisms.

The consultancy is expected to begin on 15 June 2026 and run through 31 December 2026.

Key Responsibilities

The selected consultant will lead and coordinate various disaster risk management initiatives across multiple regions and programs.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Serving as the organization’s global focal point for disaster risk management.
  • Providing strategic leadership on disaster preparedness and resilience programming.
  • Coordinating DRM activities across headquarters, regional teams, and country offices.
  • Representing the organization in global and regional disaster management forums.
  • Supporting emergency preparedness, response, recovery, and anticipatory action initiatives.

The consultant will also ensure that disaster risk management interventions align with broader humanitarian and development objectives.

Driving Geospatial Innovation

A significant aspect of the role involves leading geospatial strategy development and promoting innovative technologies that enhance disaster risk management efforts.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing and implementing geospatial strategies.
  • Supporting risk analysis and hazard monitoring initiatives.
  • Enhancing vulnerability mapping and preparedness planning.
  • Strengthening decision-support systems for disaster management authorities.
  • Promoting the use of advanced GIS and spatial data technologies.

This component of the role will help improve evidence-based decision-making and operational effectiveness in disaster-prone regions.

Supporting National Disaster Management Authorities

The specialist will oversee technical resources and provide strategic guidance to teams supporting National Disaster Management Authorities (NDMAs).

Core duties include:

  • Coordinating GIS and DRM specialists.
  • Ensuring high-quality technical assistance delivery.
  • Supporting workforce planning and resource allocation.
  • Facilitating knowledge sharing and technical mentoring.
  • Strengthening institutional capacities for disaster preparedness and response.

The role requires regular engagement with government stakeholders and disaster management institutions.

Building Strategic Partnerships

Collaboration is a critical component of the consultancy. The successful candidate will establish and strengthen partnerships with a broad range of stakeholders.

Qualifications and Experience Required

Applicants should possess a strong combination of academic credentials and practical experience.

Required qualifications include:

  • Master’s degree in Disaster Risk Management, Geography, Geospatial Sciences, Emergency Management, Humanitarian Affairs, Environmental Sciences, International Development, or a related field.
  • Minimum five years of professional experience in disaster risk management, humanitarian response, emergency management, GIS, or related sectors.
  • Demonstrated experience working with government disaster management institutions.
  • Strong expertise in GIS, remote sensing, and geospatial technologies.
  • Experience in partnership development and donor engagement.
  • Training facilitation and capacity-building experience.

Previous deployment experience during emergencies is considered highly desirable.
