Senior Researcher, China – Human Rights Watch|Apply before 2 May 2026

Human Rights Watch (HRW) is an internationally recognized organization dedicated to monitoring and defending human rights worldwide. Its Asia Division, one of six regional research programs, employs around 30 staff members, many of whom work in complex environments across Asia. The division’s mission is to investigate human rights abuses, produce high-impact reports, and engage in effective advocacy to protect vulnerable populations and promote accountability.
The Senior Researcher, China, will report to the Deputy Director of the Asia Division based in Washington, DC, and will play a central role in researching, documenting, and advocating on human rights conditions in China. The position requires in-depth knowledge of China’s political, social, and economic context, along with substantial experience in civil society, media, and policy analysis. Candidates should be able to combine rigorous research skills with strategic advocacy, producing work that informs public debate and influences decision-makers.
Core Responsibilities:
- Research and Documentation: Conduct thorough investigations into human rights issues in China, drawing on a wide range of sources, including government documents, media reports, academic research, NGO reports, and interviews with victims, witnesses, journalists, diplomats, and security personnel. Analyze findings to identify trends, emerging abuses, and broader systemic issues.
- Reporting and Communication: Draft reports, briefing papers, op-eds, letters, and submissions to international bodies to disseminate research findings. Present analyses that contextualize abuses within China’s political, social, and economic landscape and provide actionable recommendations to advance human rights.
- Advocacy and Public Engagement: Strategically respond to current events, leveraging media, social media, and other platforms to highlight human rights issues. Conduct interviews, deliver public statements, and engage with diplomats, officials, and other stakeholders to advance HRW’s objectives.
- Collaboration: Work closely with HRW staff worldwide, as well as local NGOs and civil society actors, to ensure research and advocacy efforts are coordinated and effective. Contribute expertise to internal policy discussions and help shape strategic priorities for China-related human rights initiatives.
- Fundraising Support: Assist the Asia Division Director and HRW’s Development and Outreach Department with fundraising efforts to support ongoing research and advocacy projects.
- Flexibility and Travel: Travel internationally as needed and work flexible hours to respond to urgent developments or emerging human rights crises.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Minimum six years of professional experience on China-related issues.
- Deep understanding of China’s civil society, media landscape, social media, and governmental policies.
- Ability to conduct safe, effective interviews remotely and in-person with a variety of sources, including victims and witnesses.
- Knowledge of international human rights law and practical experience in advocacy.
- Strong analytical, research, and writing skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information for diverse audiences.
- Excellent oral communication, public speaking, and interpersonal skills to work effectively with internal teams and external partners.
- Strategic thinking, initiative, and capacity to manage multiple priorities under pressure.
- Proficiency in leveraging media and electronic platforms to amplify research findings and advocacy efforts.
Additional Information:
HRW offers competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance. Relocation assistance and guidance for obtaining work authorization are available, but candidates in the US, Taipei, and Bangkok must already have valid work authorization, as HRW cannot provide visa sponsorship in these locations.
Location: Hybrid, work must be performed in or near New York, NY (Asia-based locations may be considered)
Salary: USD $88,000 – $96,000 per year
