CDC Public Health Informatics Fellowship 2027

PHIFP is a two-year paid fellowship that allows fellows to apply information science and technology to the practice of public health.

The program provides fellows with practical experience while supporting their professional development in public health informatics. It can be particularly valuable for candidates seeking careers involving public health data, technology, information systems and evidence-based decision-making.

The fellowship combines practical work with professional development, giving participants an opportunity to strengthen their technical and public health expertise.

Application Deadline for the 2027 Class

The application period for the PHIFP Class of 2027 runs from September 1 to November 6, 2026.

Application deadline: November 6, 2026

Applicants should not wait until the final days to begin their applications. Several supporting materials must be prepared before submission, including transcripts, a personal statement and recommendation requests.

Recommendation forms are due one week after the application deadline, but applicants must provide the names and email addresses of their recommenders when submitting the application.

What Applicants Need to Prepare

Candidates should update their resume or CV and gather comprehensive information about their academic and professional background.

The application requires information about:

  • Education and graduate training
  • Technical skills
  • Work and volunteer experience
  • Publications and presentations
  • Grants
  • Honors and awards
  • Professional training
  • Personal statement
  • Technical skills self-assessment
  • Recommendations
  • Unofficial university transcripts

Applicants should provide detailed information about previous employment, including job titles, responsibilities, accomplishments, locations and employment dates.

Personal Statement Requirements

The PHIFP application includes a personal statement divided into two sections.

Applicants must answer two questions, with each response limited to 500 words, for a total of up to 1,000 words.

The questions focus on:

What influenced you to consider a career in public health?

How will this fellowship help you achieve your goals?

Applicants should use these responses to clearly explain their career interests, public health motivation and how the fellowship fits into their professional plans.

Recommendation Requirements

At least three recommendation forms are required.

Recommenders should be people who understand the applicant’s academic achievements, professional attributes, aspirations and personal qualities. Current or former supervisors and professors are recommended.

At least two recommenders must not currently work at the CDC.

Recommendations must be written specifically for the PHIFP application and submitted in English. Applicants should contact their recommenders early because the forms are due one week after the fellowship application deadline.

Important Transcript Requirement for International Applicants

Applicants who earned degrees outside the United States have an additional requirement.

They must provide a course-by-course academic credential evaluation for their non-U.S. degrees before the application deadline. The evaluation must be completed by an organization that is a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).

This requirement applies to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees obtained from non-U.S. institutions.

Applicants should therefore begin the credential evaluation process well before November 6, 2026, as obtaining an evaluation can take time.

Who Should Consider This Fellowship?

The PHIFP opportunity may be particularly relevant to professionals and graduates interested in public health informatics, information technology, data, health information systems and public health practice.

Candidates should carefully review the official eligibility requirements before applying to determine whether their education and professional background meet the program’s requirements.

Additional online or in-person training can also be included in the application. This may include courses completed through universities, online learning platforms, conferences or professional development programs.

Eligible applicants can submit their applications through the online PHIFP application system during the official application period.
