UNDP Project Specialist on Investable Nature Project Pipeline: Home-Based Global Opportunity | Apply by 24 September 2026

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is inviting applications for a Project Specialist on Investable Nature Project Pipeline, a home-based international consultancy opportunity supporting biodiversity finance and investment in nature-positive projects.
The position is part of the UNDP Global Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN) and focuses on developing pipelines of bankable projects that can attract private-sector investment for nature, climate and sustainable development.
The role is offered as a one-year International Personnel Service Agreement (IPSA-10) position and is open to both internal and external applicants. The application deadline is 24 September 2026.
Project Specialist Opportunity
The Project Specialist will join the global BIOFIN team and work closely with UNDP’s Nature Investment team. The main responsibility will be to support the construction of a private-sector project pipeline for investments that contribute to nature conservation and sustainable development.
The successful candidate will provide technical assistance to BIOFIN country teams, helping them engage stakeholders, strengthen policy environments and develop high-quality investable projects.
The position will report directly to the BIOFIN Project Manager and collaborate with UNDP Country Offices, national teams, governments, development institutions, private-sector organisations, financial institutions and other international partners.
Key Responsibilities
A major focus of the role will be developing standardised investment frameworks that can help pilot countries identify, assess and prepare nature-positive projects for investment.
The Project Specialist will design methodologies, templates and criteria for identifying investable projects and will train global and national teams on building high-quality pipelines.
The successful candidate will also provide technical advice on project sourcing, pre-feasibility analysis, financial structuring and blended finance. This may include developing credible revenue streams such as biodiversity credits and ecosystem service payments.
Another important responsibility will be supporting countries in creating an enabling environment for private investment in nature finance. This will involve identifying legal, regulatory, fiscal, social and policy barriers and opportunities that influence private-sector investment.
Private Sector and Investor Engagement
The position requires strong experience working with private-sector organisations and investors.
The Project Specialist will map and prioritise relationships with financial institutions, corporations, development banks and other potential investment partners.
The role will also involve analysing investment appetite and risks associated with different types of nature-positive projects. This includes assessing potential de-risking mechanisms, guarantee requirements and financial disbursement chains.
The successful candidate will help establish national working groups that bring together public and private stakeholders to support dialogue, project development and investment opportunities.
Investment Matchmaking Platform
Another significant component of the role will be contributing to the design of an investment matchmaking platform.
The Project Specialist will lead the initial conceptualisation of a global or regional platform that could connect project proponents with potential investors. This will include defining the platform’s scope, features, data requirements and user needs.
The successful candidate will also prepare a roadmap covering testing, expansion, technical requirements and strategies for attracting investor interest.
The role will coordinate with organisations and initiatives including the UNDP Nature Investment Facility, UNEP Finance Initiative, Financial Sector Deepening Africa, UNCDF and the Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance.
Skills and Experience Required
Applicants must have an advanced university degree, such as a Master’s degree in Management, Finance, Economics or a related field. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree in these areas may also be considered if they have additional qualifying professional experience.
Applicants with a Master’s degree require at least five years of relevant professional experience, while those with a bachelor’s degree require at least seven years.
Relevant experience should include work in the finance sector, development banks, private equity, impact investment or sustainable finance, with a connection to environment, nature or climate.
Experience working in the private sector, managing relationships with investors and financiers, and developing pipelines of bankable projects in developing countries is required.
Experience designing investable projects in sectors such as agriculture, forestry, tourism, fisheries or water would be an advantage. Experience with blended finance facilities and transactions is also desirable.
Fluency in English is required, while knowledge of French or Spanish would be an asset. A professional finance qualification such as CFA or an equivalent certification is desirable.
