PowerSwitch Action is seeking an experienced Communications Manager to lead campaign communications, digital strategy, media engagement, and storytelling across its national network of grassroots organizations in the United States.

This is a full-time remote position offering a competitive starting salary of $74,000–$93,000 per year, depending on experience. The role provides an opportunity for an experienced communications professional to work alongside organizers, campaigners, researchers, fundraisers, and grassroots leaders on campaigns focused on social, racial, economic, and environmental justice.

About PowerSwitch Action

PowerSwitch Action is a national network of 21 grassroots organizations working across cities, counties, and states throughout the United States.

The network brings together organizations working across labor, housing, racial justice, environmental, faith, neighborhood, and other movements. Its long-term agenda focuses on building people power and advancing a multiracial feminist democracy and economy.

The Communications Manager will play an important role in communicating this work to the public, strengthening campaigns, growing digital audiences, and elevating the stories of grassroots leaders and communities.

About the Communications Manager Role

The successful candidate will report to the Communications Director and lead communications for one or two major campaigns or programmes at a time.

The position combines strategic communications with hands-on content production. The Communications Manager will work closely with campaigners, local affiliates, communications teams, organizers, researchers, development staff, and external partners.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing communications strategies for major campaigns.
  • Crafting messaging and talking points.
  • Writing press releases, op-eds, blogs, email updates, social media content, factsheets, and video scripts.
  • Supporting spokesperson preparation and earned media efforts.
  • Advising affiliates and allies on campaign communications.
  • Managing email and social media programmes.
  • Coordinating content calendars and digital workflows.
  • Managing the organization’s email programme through EveryAction.
  • Monitoring audience growth, engagement, analytics, and digital trends.

  • Exploring innovative digital organising tactics.
  • Identifying media opportunities and pitching stories.
  • Supporting communications during breaking news and rapid-response situations.

Digital Communications and Audience Growth

Digital strategy will be a major part of the position.

The Communications Manager will oversee PowerSwitch Action’s email and social media channels while developing strategies to increase audience reach and engagement.

The successful candidate will be expected to understand how digital platforms evolve and identify emerging opportunities that could strengthen campaigns.

Experience with email programmes, social media management, audience growth, analytics, and innovative digital tactics will therefore be important.

The organisation has a creative lead, meaning applicants are not expected to have advanced graphic design or video-production skills. Instead, the focus is on strategy, messaging, content, digital engagement, and communications leadership.

Campaign and Media Communications

The role also involves helping campaigns gain visibility and influence public narratives.

The Communications Manager will develop communications materials that explain campaign priorities and motivate audiences to take action. They will also work with local communicators to support earned media and spokesperson preparation.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Building relationships with journalists and editors.
  • Identifying relevant media opportunities.
  • Pitching stories and opinion pieces.
  • Supporting interviews with staff and community leaders.
  • Preparing statements during breaking news.
  • Developing rapid-response messaging.
  • Coordinating communications with campaign partners.

Candidates with existing media relationships, journalism experience, or a strong record of securing earned media coverage will have an advantage, although these are not required.

Candidate Requirements

PowerSwitch Action is looking for someone with practical experience leading communications for organizing, advocacy, basebuilding, or corporate campaigns.

The ideal candidate should demonstrate:

While not required, PowerSwitch Action values candidates who have experience with:

  • National media and press relationships.
  • Labor, housing, climate, technology, politics, or social justice reporting.
  • Large networks and coalitions.
