Are you an experienced humanitarian, child protection, mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS), or programme management professional looking for a consultancy opportunity with an international organisation? About the Consultancy
Children affected by armed conflict face serious protection risks, including recruitment and use by armed forces or armed groups, abduction, sexual violence, death, serious injury and other violations of their rights. These experiences can have significant and long-lasting effects on children’s mental health and psychosocial wellbeing.
In 2022, UNICEF and the MHPSS Collaborative developed operational guidance for MHPSS programming involving CAAFAG. However, the guidance has not yet been field tested.
Plan International, working in collaboration with UNICEF, is therefore seeking a consultant to test the guidance in two locations and revise it based on feedback from practitioners and other stakeholders.
The assignment will help ensure that the guidance is practical, accessible and responsive to the realities faced by professionals delivering MHPSS and child protection programmes in conflict-affected settings.
Key Objectives
The consultant will be expected to achieve two primary objectives:
- Successfully field test the MHPSS operational guidance for CAAFAG in two locations.
- Ensure that the revised guidance is user-friendly and responsive to the needs of field practitioners.
The field testing process will involve multiple sectors, including health, education and child protection, helping ensure that the final guidance can be effectively applied across different humanitarian and service-delivery contexts.
Key Responsibilities
The successful consultant will undertake a range of research, coordination, consultation and technical responsibilities.

Establish a reference group:
The consultant will set up a reference group involving focal points from the MHPSS Collaborative, UNICEF, MHPSS practitioners and child protection actors.
Conduct key informant interviews:
Remote interviews will be conducted with relevant stakeholders to gather feedback on the existing operational guidance and understand the practical needs of professionals implementing MHPSS programmes for CAAFAG.
Develop a field-testing strategy:
The consultant will create a clear strategy for testing the guidance, including the development of appropriate workshop materials.
Conduct field testing:
The consultant will facilitate field testing of the operational guidance in two locations, engaging practitioners from relevant sectors.
Revise the guidance:
Feedback gathered during interviews and field testing will be analysed and incorporated into an updated version of the operational guidance.
Support translation and design:
The consultant will supervise the translation and design processes for the revised resource to help ensure the final product is accessible and professionally presented.
Support the launch:
The consultant will participate in the launch of the revised operational guidance.
