People in Need (PIN) is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Humanitarian Advisor to join its Humanitarian Unit. This is a home-based, full-time position with frequent short-term field deployments (approximately 50–60% travel), offering a unique opportunity to shape and strengthen global emergency response operations across diverse humanitarian contexts.

The contract is for one year, with the possibility of extension, and the preferred start date is as soon as possible. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until 28 February 2026, and the position may close earlier if filled.

About People in Need’s Humanitarian Unit

The Humanitarian Unit, based at PIN headquarters in Prague, serves as an advisory, coordination, and partial implementation body responsible for enhancing the quality, relevance, and effectiveness of PIN’s global humanitarian response.

The team focuses on:

  • Coordinating early response during sudden-onset disasters
  • Supporting program establishment in protracted crises and conflict settings
  • Strengthening emergency preparedness across all PIN country programs
  • Providing technical support and capacity building
  • Coordinating the PIN Rapid Deployment Unit
  • Engaging in humanitarian networking, advocacy, and innovation

The Humanitarian Unit works closely with regional desk officers, technical advisors, and the Program Strategy and Impact Department (PSI) to ensure coherent and principled humanitarian action.

Due to increased operational demands and frequent deployments, PIN is expanding the team with an additional Humanitarian Advisor.

Role Overview

The Humanitarian Advisor plays a critical role in coordinating emergency responses, supporting new country program start-ups, strengthening preparedness systems, and ensuring compliance with humanitarian principles and donor requirements.

The position combines strategic advisory responsibilities with hands-on operational support, making it ideal for professionals experienced in both emergency coordination and field-level implementation.

Key Responsibilities

Coordination of Emergency Response

The Humanitarian Advisor will:

  • Support the establishment of new country programs in natural disasters, conflicts, and protracted crises, particularly during the initial response and stabilization phases (typically 2–3 months)
  • Coordinate responses in conflict and protracted crisis environments
  • Lead and support the PIN Rapid Deployment Unit
  • Monitor and analyse global humanitarian crises and conflict trends, identifying opportunities for PIN engagement
  • Support coordination with Alliance2015, humanitarian partners, and donor stakeholders
  • Contribute to the establishment and coordination of humanitarian responses within the Czech Republic, including flood response and recovery initiatives
  • Lead and contribute to humanitarian project proposal development upon request from country programs

Cross-Cutting Support and Networking

The role also involves:

  • Coordinating the implementation of PIN’s emergency preparedness and response strategy
  • Supporting field assessments, humanitarian strategy development, and intervention design
  • Ensuring quality, consistency, and compliance of project designs with humanitarian principles and donor requirements, particularly for ECHO, BHA, SDC, GAC, and UN funding
  • Providing technical consultancy to ongoing emergency programs
  • Collaborating closely with technical advisors within the Knowledge and Learning Unit
  • Providing gap-filling support to emergency programs when urgently required
  • Strengthening relationships with Alliance2015 members, NGOs, donors, global clusters, and humanitarian networks
  • Tracking humanitarian innovations and trends and integrating them into PIN best practices
  • Supporting humanitarian advocacy efforts

Capacity Building and Emergency Preparedness

The Humanitarian Advisor will contribute to organisational learning and readiness by:

  • Building the emergency response capacity of PIN staff
  • Updating and maintaining humanitarian manuals, tools, and policies
  • Supporting staff inductions and onboarding
  • Coordinating emergency-related trainings
  • Supporting the development and regular updating of emergency preparedness plans across PIN country programs

Required Qualifications and Skills

PIN is seeking candidates who demonstrate strong humanitarian leadership, adaptability, and analytical capability.

Essential Requirements

  • A degree in a relevant field, such as humanitarian action, social sciences, or related disciplines
  • Strong analytical and information synthesis skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strategic thinking and sound judgement in high-pressure environments
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills, with the ability to meet deadlines under stress
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written)

Desirable Assets

  • Knowledge of French or Arabic
  • Experience in conflict-affected or protracted crisis settings
  • Familiarity with humanitarian coordination mechanisms and donor compliance standards
