Reporting to the VP of People & Culture, the People & Culture Officer supports essential HR functions while contributing to a broader people strategy that centers equity, belonging, and organizational care.
This role balances strategic thinking with day-to-day operations, ensuring that the organization continues to be a high-functioning, inclusive, and values-aligned workplace.
Key Responsibilities
Recruitment & Employer Branding
The People & Culture Officer leads recruitment processes that reflect the organization’s commitment to fairness, transparency, and equity. Responsibilities include:
- Managing full-cycle recruitment in partnership with hiring managers, including drafting job descriptions, conducting initial interviews, and overseeing candidate pipelines.
- Strengthening the organization’s employer brand through proactive monitoring of external reputation, recruitment channels, and candidate feedback.
- Ensuring that the hiring experience is equitable, responsive, and grounded in feminist and justice-centered values.
Employee Experience & Engagement
A core aspect of the role is enhancing the employee experience and strengthening organizational culture. This includes:
- Partnering with the VP of People & Culture to design and implement initiatives that deepen employee engagement, such as staff surveys, team-building activities, and organizational retreats.
- Delivering an inclusive, warm, and effective onboarding experience that ensures new staff have the resources, context, and support they need from day one.
- Supporting Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) initiatives in partnership with Staff Council, the Black Liberation Team, the Executive Team, and DEIB working groups.
- Identifying professional development needs and coordinating trainings, mentorship opportunities, and coaching sessions.
- Supporting the performance management cycle by helping managers set goals, facilitating feedback practices, and coordinating annual review processes.
People Operations, Policies & Compliance
The People & Culture Officer ensures that organizational policies, practices, and systems reflect legal compliance and the organization’s commitment to equity. Responsibilities include:
- Monitoring employment law requirements and advising on compliance risks or necessary policy updates.
- Developing and communicating people policies that are clear, values-aligned, and grounded in transparency and fairness.
- Serving as a confidential point of contact for staff with workplace concerns and escalating issues appropriately and sensitively.
- Conducting compensation and benefits benchmarking to maintain equitable and competitive total rewards.
- Maintaining HR systems, streamlining workflows, and recommending improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
People Strategy & Organizational Development
In collaboration with the VP of People & Culture, the officer contributes to long-term people strategy and organizational capacity building. This includes:
- Supporting the development of a comprehensive people strategy aligned with organizational goals, staff needs, and justice-centered values.
- Researching HR and organizational development best practices and offering recommendations to strengthen the employee and candidate experience.
- Helping manage organizational change by preparing communications, supporting transitions, and ensuring staff feel informed and supported.
- Creating dashboards and tracking people data—including turnover, engagement, and recruitment timelines—to support data-driven decision-making.
- Contributing to additional projects and responsibilities as needed to advance the team’s goals.

- Minimum of 5 years of progressive HR or People & Culture experience, ideally in a nonprofit or mission-driven setting.
- Knowledge of HR best practices, employment law, and compliance.
- Experience leading recruitment and talent management processes.
- Proven ability to design and implement HR policies and systems.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills across diverse audiences.
- Ability to build relationships across all organizational levels.
- Experience supporting learning, development, and organizational capacity-building initiatives.
- Strong organizational and project-management skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office/Google Workspace and HRIS platforms.
- Commitment to feminist, equity-centered, community-driven HR approaches.
- Comfort working across cultures and global contexts.
Compensation & Equal Opportunity
