SOS Méditerranée Advocacy Officer 2026: 3-Month Remote Gap-Fill Opportunity

SOS Méditerranée is seeking an experienced Advocacy Officer for a three-month fixed-term gap-fill position supporting its advocacy and operational communications work. The opportunity is aimed at professionals with experience in advocacy, international development, humanitarian affairs, migration, search and rescue, research and policy analysis.
The role provides an opportunity to contribute to humanitarian advocacy focused on the protection of people at sea while working with teams across different European locations. Depending on the country of posting, the position may be based in Marseille, Paris, Berlin, Milan or Rome, with remote working available for eligible locations.
Advocacy Officer Job Opportunity
The Advocacy Officer will join the Advocacy and Operational Communications Department and report to the Head of Advocacy and Public Positionings. The position has been created as a temporary gap-fill role to maintain continuity within the advocacy team during a three-month period of unpaid leave.
Because of the short-term nature of the appointment, the successful candidate will focus on defined priority areas, particularly data and evidence, public positionings, advocacy materials and stakeholder engagement.
The role involves working closely with operational teams, including onboard search and rescue personnel, protection and medical teams, air crew and shore-based colleagues.
Key Responsibilities
The Advocacy Officer will support the collection, organisation and management of operational data in accordance with established data collection procedures. The role also involves helping maintain systems used to store advocacy-related information and documentation.
An important part of the position will be supporting the collection and documentation of operational information and survivor testimonies while following informed consent, safeguarding and data protection standards.
The successful candidate will also monitor developments relating to search and rescue and migration policy. They will help prepare internal briefing notes and analytical updates on relevant political and policy developments.
Another responsibility will be supporting advocacy outputs, including reports, briefing notes and talking points, using available operational data and existing organisational positions.
The Advocacy Officer may also contribute to internal communication around advocacy initiatives and, when requested, represent the organisation at selected meetings involving NGO networks, working groups and coalitions operating in humanitarian, maritime and search-and-rescue sectors.
Who Can Apply?
The position is particularly suited to professionals with a strong academic background and practical advocacy experience.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Law, International Relations, Humanitarian Affairs, Political Science or a related discipline. At least three years of professional experience in advocacy within international development contexts is required.
Experience working in search and rescue or migration contexts is considered an advantage.
Candidates should have knowledge of migration dynamics in the Central Mediterranean and the wider European migration environment. Experience with data collection and management, as well as using quantitative and qualitative information to support advocacy, is also important.
Strong research and writing abilities are required because the role involves producing clear briefing notes, memoranda and other advocacy materials. Applicants should also understand humanitarian principles, ethics and responsible data practices.
Skills and Language Requirements
The successful candidate should be comfortable using Microsoft Office and standard collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams and SharePoint. Working knowledge of Excel for data management is expected, while familiarity with platforms such as Kobo is an advantage.
Excellent English proficiency at a minimum C1 level is required. Knowledge of Italian, French or German will be considered an additional advantage.
The organisation is also looking for someone who can work effectively with remote teams, remain self-motivated and adapt quickly to changing circumstances. Since the position is a short-term gap fill, the ability to understand new systems and responsibilities quickly will be particularly valuable.
Contract, Location and Salary
The position is offered as a three-month fixed-term contract.
The preferred locations include the organisation’s offices in Marseille or Paris, while remote arrangements may be available for candidates based in Berlin, Milan or Rome.
Applicants must have a valid work permit allowing them to work within the European Union.
Salary and contractual conditions will depend on the country of posting and applicable third-sector salary arrangements.
Application Deadline
Interested candidates should submit their resume and cover letter in English through the designated online application form.
The application deadline is 18 September 2026. Applicants should also check their email after submitting the application because a confirmation step is required to finalise the application.
For enquiries, applicants should follow the contact instructions provided in the official vacancy information.
