Regulatory Expert at Sight and Life: Nigeria Opportunity | Food Regulation & Nutrition | Apply by September 15, 2026

Sight and Life Foundation is seeking a qualified Regulatory Expert to support its fermentation project in Nigeria. The opportunity is designed for an experienced food regulatory professional who can assess Nigerian food policies, regulations and standards and contribute to a roadmap for scaling fermented foods.

The assignment will run from October 2026 to August 2027. The successful candidate can work remotely from anywhere in Nigeria but must be willing to travel when required. Applications must be submitted by 15 September 2026.

About the Regulatory Expert Opportunity

The Regulatory Expert will contribute to a project focused on the potential of fermented foods in Nigeria. Fermentation is a widely used and relatively low-cost food processing method that is already part of local dietary practices.

The project aims to develop a practical roadmap for scaling fermented foods while ensuring that proposed approaches meet applicable food regulatory requirements.

The consultant will conduct a comprehensive review of relevant regulations, policies and guidelines and assess how fermentation may affect selected food products. The assignment will also involve interviews with key stakeholders and informants.

Key Responsibilities

Review Nigerian Food Regulations

A major responsibility will be identifying the government bodies, ministries and regulatory authorities relevant to fermented food products.

The expert will review applicable food policies, legislation, standards, guidelines, regulatory requirements and approval processes. The work will also consider international standards and guidance from organizations such as Codex, WHO and FAO.

The consultant will assess compliance requirements for fermented foods and identify the approvals and regulatory steps necessary for market entry.

Identify Regulatory Barriers and Market Entry Requirements

The expert will identify potential barriers that could affect the scaling and commercialization of fermented foods in Nigeria.

This includes determining the necessary regulatory approvals, compliance protocols and supporting documentation. The findings will help establish a clearer pathway for businesses and stakeholders interested in expanding fermented food production.

Evaluate Costs, Benefits and Potential Impacts

The assignment will examine the potential costs associated with regulatory compliance.

This may include recurring expenses related to testing, containment engineering, validation and regulatory filings required by food safety or other authorities.

The consultant will also review biological safety standards, containment protocols and effluent discharge requirements where relevant to preventing environmental or health risks.

Another important task will be comparing the compliance practices of selected companies against regional regulatory standards to identify gaps.

Develop Reports and Practical Tools

The Regulatory Expert will work closely with the Sight and Life team to develop insights from the research.

Expected outputs include reports, regulatory checklists and other relevant documents that can support the project’s roadmap for scaling fermented foods in Nigeria.

Strong analytical and report-writing skills will therefore be important throughout the assignment.

Required Qualifications and Skills

The opportunity is intended for an experienced regulatory professional with a strong background in food regulation.

Applicants should have at least a master’s degree in food science, food safety and quality, or a related field.

Extensive expertise, knowledge and practical experience in food regulations are required. Candidates should also demonstrate an established track record of conducting similar regulatory work.

Experience training food regulatory personnel would be an advantage.

The successful candidate should have excellent analytical, report-writing and presentation skills and be able to communicate effectively in English.

Location, Duration and Working Arrangements

The assignment is based in Nigeria, with the flexibility to work remotely from anywhere in the country.

However, the selected expert must be willing to travel when necessary as part of the project.

The consultancy is scheduled to run from October 2026 through August 2027, providing an opportunity to contribute to a longer-term nutrition and food systems initiative.

How to Apply

Qualified candidates should submit their resume to Priyanka Kumari at priyanka.kumari@sightandlife.org.

The application deadline is 15 September 2026.

Candidates should ensure that their resumes clearly demonstrate relevant experience in food regulation, food safety and quality, regulatory assessment, stakeholder engagement and analytical reporting.

Conclusion

This Regulatory Expert opportunity offers an experienced food regulation professional the chance to contribute to an important project focused on fermented foods, nutrition and local food systems in Nigeria.

With a project period running from October 2026 to August 2027, the assignment could suit a senior food science or food safety specialist with practical regulatory experience and an interest in supporting evidence-based approaches to nutrition and food innovation.

Interested candidates should submit their applications before the 15 September 2026 deadline.
