NECHAMA: Jewish Response to Disaster is actively recruiting a Communications Director to lead and advance the organization’s communications and brand strategy. This full-time remote role, open to candidates anywhere in the United States, will play a pivotal role in raising NECHAMA’s profile and connecting the Jewish community with its disaster relief mission.

About NECHAMA

Founded in 1993, NECHAMA is the only national Jewish organization in the United States dedicated to providing sustained direct recovery services following natural disasters, including hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods. Grounded in Jewish values, the organization focuses on three primary priorities:

  • Humanizing Jewish identity while representing Jewish ideals in communities affected by disasters.
  • Offering a platform for volunteers of all faiths to explore purpose and identity.
  • Spreading comfort and hope to individuals and communities in need.

NECHAMA combines volunteer mobilization, community engagement, and strategic partnerships to ensure lasting impact and recovery support.

Position Overview: Communications Director

The Communications Director will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive communications strategy that elevates NECHAMA’s national visibility, strengthens stakeholder relationships, and integrates seamlessly with the organization’s fundraising goals. Reporting directly to the CEO, the Director will also supervise the Volunteer Coordinator and lead the organization’s external messaging efforts.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Strategic Communication Leadership
    • Develop and execute a holistic communications strategy aligned with NECHAMA’s mission.
    • Serve as a strategic advisor to the CEO on messaging, positioning, and external communications.
    • Steward the organization’s brand, including the creation and maintenance of communication protocols and an annual communications calendar.
  • Content Development and Digital Strategy
    • Produce and distribute high-quality written and visual content, such as impact stories, press releases, public statements, and field updates.
    • Lead NECHAMA’s website management, content updates, and ongoing optimization.
    • Oversee digital presence on platforms including Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and other media, using analytics to refine strategy and drive engagement.
  • Volunteer and Stakeholder Engagement
    • Provide strategic oversight of volunteer engagement in collaboration with program leadership.
    • Gather data, impact stories, and outcomes from clients, volunteers, and partners.
    • Build and maintain relationships with Jewish communal organizations, disaster relief agencies, and corporate partners.
  • Media and Public Relations
    • Lead earned media initiatives, including relationships with journalists, drafting op-eds, and engaging with Jewish and general press outlets.
    • Represent NECHAMA at communal events and public briefings.
    • Plan and execute communications strategies for signature events, such as the Real Estate Rockers in Relief fundraiser.
  • Fundraising and Campaign Support
    • Collaborate with the development team to integrate communications into donor cultivation and fundraising campaigns.
    • Develop engagement and fundraising toolkits for Jewish lifecycle events, including b’nai mitzvah.

Candidate Profile

NECHAMA seeks candidates who bring both professional experience and personal alignment with its mission. Ideal qualifications include:

  • Experience: 5+ years in nonprofit or mission-driven communications, with 3+ years in progressively responsible roles.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or certification in communications, marketing, PR, or Jewish communal service preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Proficiency with digital platforms, social media, email marketing tools, and CRM systems (Salesforce preferred).
    • Experience in web management, video production, and content creation a plus.
    • Strong organizational, project management, and analytical skills.
  • Personal Attributes:
    • Passion for NECHAMA’s mission and values.
    • Ability to foster collaboration across diverse communities and promote racial equity.
    • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
    • Capacity to work occasional evenings or weekends in a fully remote environment.

Eligible candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. without requiring visa sponsorship.


Compensation and Benefits

The position offers a competitive salary range of $80,000–$90,000, commensurate with experience. NECHAMA provides a comprehensive benefits package, including:
