Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is inviting applications from experienced medical physicists and biomedical engineering professionals for a Diagnostic Imaging Advisor – Medical Physicist position. The role offers an opportunity to contribute to the safety, quality and accessibility of diagnostic imaging services across MSF projects worldwide.
The position was posted on 20 August 2026, with applications closing on 10 September 2026. It is a permanent position at 50%, with an expected starting date of September 2026. The successful candidate will generally be offered a contract through the MSF office in their country of residence at the time of application.
About MSF
Médecins Sans Frontières is an international, independent medical humanitarian organization providing emergency medical assistance to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters and limited access to healthcare.
The organization operates in challenging environments around the world, where reliable and safe medical services are essential. Within MSF, the Diagnostic Imaging Working Group (DIWG) supports the selection, implementation and quality control of diagnostic imaging technologies used across projects.
A major focus of the group is ensuring that X-ray services meet appropriate standards for quality and radiation safety.
About the Position
The Medical Physicist Advisor will join the Diagnostic Imaging Working Group within the MSF International Diagnostic Network. The position is designed to help translate the group’s objectives into practical initiatives that improve access to safe, high-quality medical imaging.
The advisor will provide technical expertise on X-ray equipment, radiation protection, quality assurance and quality control. The role will involve working with colleagues across MSF and, where necessary, external specialists.
The position may also require travel to support MSF projects and field teams.
Key Responsibilities
A major responsibility will be providing expert guidance on radiation safety and X-ray service quality. The advisor will help develop, implement and monitor policies, protocols and recommendations concerning imaging services.
Specific duties include:
- Developing and piloting quality-control strategies for X-ray services.
- Supporting the use of tools such as X-ray dosimeters and phantoms.
- Developing guidelines for personal dosimetry among X-ray staff.
- Advising MSF projects on radiation safety and quality control.
- Supporting the development of X-ray service assessment and mapping tools.
- Developing policies, guidelines, protocols and briefing materials.
- Supporting training programmes for biomedical engineers and other relevant healthcare professionals.
- Delivering remote and potentially on-site training.
- Developing monitoring and evaluation tools for X-ray services.
- Supporting the systematic collection of imaging-related data.
- Monitoring patient radiation doses and assessing the quality of X-ray services.
- Identifying strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for quality improvement.
The advisor will also contribute to knowledge management by developing resources and helping establish a structured document library for X-ray-related information.
Qualifications and Experience
This position is aimed at highly specialized professionals with substantial medical physics expertise.
Applicants are required to have an MSc degree in Physics or Biomedical Engineering, together with four years of post-academic specialization as a Medical Physics Expert, including Radiation Protection Expert certification.
At least three years of experience in a similar international or national position within the humanitarian, public or private sector is required. Previous MSF or humanitarian experience would be an advantage.
Candidates should have strong experience with plain X-ray and fluoroscopic X-ray equipment, particularly in quality assurance, quality control, procurement, radiation safety, compliance and risk management.
Experience with departmental, personal and patient radiation-safety dosimetry is also required, as is experience drafting, implementing, monitoring and reporting on radiation-safety policies and procedures.
Technical Skills
The successful candidate should be comfortable working with relevant technical and digital tools. MS Office proficiency is required, including intermediate to advanced Excel skills.
Experience with PCXMC or similar dose-simulation software, as well as PACS and DICOM imaging software, is expected.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are important because the advisor will be responsible for developing technical resources, advising colleagues and delivering training.
Fluency in English is required, while French is desirable.
Why This Role Matters
Safe diagnostic imaging is an important component of effective healthcare, particularly in humanitarian environments where medical facilities may operate under difficult conditions and with limited technical resources.
X-ray technology can play a critical role in diagnosing injuries and illnesses, but it must be properly maintained and operated to ensure both image quality and patient and staff safety.
Through this position, the Medical Physicist Advisor will help MSF teams strengthen radiation protection, improve imaging quality and establish practical systems for monitoring and quality control.
The role combines technical medical physics expertise with humanitarian impact, making it particularly relevant for professionals interested in applying specialized knowledge to international healthcare operations.
Application Details
The position is open to candidates who meet the required professional and technical qualifications. MSF emphasizes an inclusive working environment and welcomes applications from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
