Applications for the Spring 2027 cycle must be submitted by October 15, 2026.

MPI Young Scholars Internship 2027 Overview

The Demetrios G. Papademetriou Young Scholars Program is designed to help develop the next generation of professionals working in migration and public policy. Interns contribute to MPI projects while receiving valuable professional development and exposure to policy research.

The Spring 2027 internship will run from January through April 2027. Both full-time and part-time opportunities are available, with full-time interns receiving a $1,472 biweekly stipend. Part-time interns receive a prorated stipend.

The programme is particularly suitable for individuals seeking to build careers in migration research, refugee affairs, immigrant integration, communications, international development, and public policy.

Who Can Apply?

The MPI Young Scholars Internship is open to a broad range of applicants. Candidates should generally be at least college juniors and demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills.

Eligible applicants may include:

  • Current undergraduate students
  • College graduates
  • Graduate students
  • Early-career professionals
  • Individuals without traditional college experience who have substantial relevant professional experience

Applicants do not need to be U.S. citizens. Individuals who remain outside the United States throughout the internship may apply for remote opportunities. Applicants seeking to work physically in the United States must already have the required work authorization before the internship begins.

Foreign-language skills, quantitative research abilities, Microsoft Office proficiency, and relevant academic or professional experience can strengthen an application.

Available Internship Areas

Research interns can work across several MPI programme areas. These include U.S. Immigration, covering topics such as asylum, refugee pathways, immigration enforcement, legal immigration, employment outcomes, and demographic trends.

The International Migration programme examines refugee resettlement, immigrant integration, labour migration, migration and development, borders, mobility, and returns and reintegration.

Another area is U.S. Immigrant Integration, which explores topics such as education, workforce development, language access, and state and local immigration policies.

Applicants may also work with the Refugee and Forced Displacement Initiative, which focuses on refugee livelihoods, self-reliance, integration, and international responses to displacement.

For the Latin America and Caribbean Initiative, strong written and oral Spanish proficiency is required.

What Will Interns Do?

MPI research interns can gain hands-on experience through a variety of responsibilities. These may include conducting research and policy analysis, preparing literature reviews, summarizing research, contributing to research papers, supporting events, and following relevant hearings and policy developments.

There is also a Communications Internship for candidates interested in digital communication and public engagement.

Communications interns may assist with media monitoring, social media campaigns, visual content, event organization, short-form writing, promotion of MPI publications, and potentially multimedia editing.

What Does the Internship Pay?

The internship is a paid opportunity. Full-time interns receive $1,472 every two weeks, while part-time interns receive a prorated stipend.

The programme lasts four months, with the Spring 2027 cycle running from January to April. However, applicants considering the Washington, DC option should note that MPI does not cover relocation expenses.
