About the Community Operations Manager Role

The Community Operations Manager will serve as the operational connection between the MetaFilter Board of Directors, volunteer moderators, committees, contractors, and the wider community.

This role focuses on improving operational systems, supporting volunteers, coordinating distributed teams, and maintaining healthy community engagement.

The successful applicant will help create efficient processes that allow volunteers to contribute effectively while ensuring transparency, accountability, and consistency across community activities.

Key Responsibilities

Managing Volunteer Moderator Operations

The Community Operations Manager will oversee the daily operations of MetaFilter’s volunteer moderation program.

Responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating moderator schedules and ensuring adequate moderation coverage.
  • Supporting volunteer moderators with resources and guidance.
  • Facilitating communication between moderators and the Board of Directors.
  • Conducting volunteer check-ins and support conversations.
  • Identifying training needs and recommending improvements.
  • Supporting volunteer retention through recognition and effective communication.

Supporting Online Community Operations

The role will also involve maintaining a positive and respectful online environment.

Key duties include:

  • Serving as a steward of MetaFilter’s community values.
  • Responding to community questions and concerns.
