African Philanthropy Media Fellowship 2026: Apply for the 6-Week Virtual Fellowship

Applications are now open for Cohort 2 of the African Philanthropy Media Fellowship (APMF), a six-week virtual programme designed for emerging African journalists, content creators, and media practitioners.

The fellowship aims to strengthen participants’ understanding of the African philanthropy and development ecosystem while equipping them with practical skills to produce impactful stories about African organisations, communities, actors, and locally driven solutions.

The programme will take place entirely online from 10 October to 21 November 2026, making it accessible to eligible participants across Africa and beyond, provided they have reliable internet access and a computer.

About the African Philanthropy Media Fellowship

The African Philanthropy Media Fellowship is designed to support emerging media professionals who want to improve how they report on philanthropy and development across Africa.

Participants will explore the African philanthropy ecosystem while developing practical approaches to reporting and storytelling. The programme places emphasis on data-driven reporting, impact-focused storytelling, and African narratives.

Through the fellowship, participants will have an opportunity to develop stories that can highlight African philanthropy, development initiatives, organisations, individuals, and solutions.

The programme also combines training with mentorship and editorial support, helping participants improve the quality and potential reach of their work.

What Fellows Will Gain

Selected participants will benefit from several learning and professional development opportunities throughout the six-week programme.

One of the key areas of focus is developing a deeper understanding of Africa’s philanthropy ecosystem. This can help journalists and media practitioners better understand how philanthropic organisations, funders, communities, and development actors contribute to social change.

Participants will also build practical data-driven reporting and storytelling skills. These skills can help emerging journalists produce stronger evidence-based stories and communicate complex development issues in an engaging and accessible way.

Another important component is the opportunity to produce publishable stories. Fellows will work on stories that amplify African perspectives, highlight important actors, and showcase solutions emerging from the continent.

Participants will also receive mentorship and editorial support, providing an opportunity to strengthen their work with guidance from experienced professionals.

The fellowship further provides access to potential publication platforms through Philanthropy Circuit and partner networks, giving participants an opportunity to expand the visibility of their work.

Who Can Apply?

The African Philanthropy Media Fellowship is aimed at emerging African journalists, content creators, and media practitioners.

Applicants should have an interest in storytelling and reporting on issues connected to African philanthropy and development.

The programme may be particularly useful for professionals working in journalism, digital media, communications, content creation, development reporting, social impact storytelling, and related fields.

Applicants should also be prepared to participate actively throughout the six-week programme.

Because the programme is entirely virtual, applicants need access to a computer and a stable internet connection. Some fellowship sessions will take place on weekends, so applicants should consider their availability before applying.

Programme Dates and Format

The fellowship will run for six weeks, from 10 October to 21 November 2026.

All activities will take place 100% virtually. Weekly sessions will be organised throughout the programme, with some sessions scheduled during weekends.

The virtual format allows participants from different locations to take part without needing to travel to a physical training venue.

Application Requirements

Interested applicants must complete the online application form and answer all required questions.

Applicants are also required to attach or provide links to requested supporting materials, including their CV and work samples.

Work samples are particularly important because the fellowship is focused on journalism, content creation, reporting, and storytelling. Applicants should therefore prepare relevant examples that demonstrate their experience and ability to communicate stories effectively.

Candidates should ensure that all required questions are answered and that the requested documents and links are provided before submitting their applications.

Application Deadline

The deadline to apply for Cohort 2 of the African Philanthropy Media Fellowship is Monday, 21 September 2026.
