Media & Storytelling Officer: Remote Opportunity with Great Southern Reef Foundation|Deadline 28 Aug 2026

For communications professionals who are passionate about environmental conservation, marine science and impactful storytelling, a new remote opportunity with the Great Southern Reef Foundation offers an exciting chance to turn scientific knowledge into stories that inspire action.
The Foundation is seeking a Media & Storytelling Officer to help raise awareness of Australia’s Great Southern Reef, one of the country’s most significant marine ecosystems. The position is part-time at 0.4 FTE, equivalent to 15 hours per week, and can be performed remotely from anywhere in Australia.
The initial contract is for six months, with strong potential for continued and increased employment as the organisation grows. Applications close on August 28, 2026.
About the Great Southern Reef Foundation
The Great Southern Reef stretches for more than 8,000 kilometres around southern Australia, supporting diverse marine life, coastal communities and economic activity. Despite its ecological and social importance, the reef remains relatively unknown to much of the Australian public.
The Great Southern Reef Foundation is working to change that by building a national movement around the reef through science, storytelling, education and community engagement.
The organisation works with researchers, conservation practitioners, educators, filmmakers, communities and partners to translate scientific knowledge into compelling public narratives. Through stronger awareness and collaboration, the Foundation aims to contribute to a thriving future for Australia’s temperate reefs.
About the Media & Storytelling Officer Role
The successful candidate will be responsible for finding, developing and sharing stories that help define the Great Southern Reef.
This is a role for someone who can move comfortably between science and storytelling. The successful applicant will work closely with researchers, the Creative Director and project partners to identify interesting stories emerging from research, expeditions, community initiatives, partnerships and policy developments.
The role goes beyond simply producing content. The officer will need to identify the human stories behind scientific discoveries and communicate them in ways that capture public attention.
Whether writing a feature article, interviewing a scientist, developing a media pitch or supporting a funding proposal, the central objective will be to answer an important question: What is the story that will make people care?
Key Responsibilities
A major part of the position will involve story discovery and development.
The Media & Storytelling Officer will identify compelling opportunities emerging from research and conservation activities and work proactively with researchers and partners to develop them. This includes interviewing scientists, community members and project partners to uncover perspectives that can make complex subjects more accessible.
The successful candidate will also research, write and edit articles, features, case studies and other editorial materials for the Foundation’s website, publications and partner communications.
Another important responsibility will be developing storytelling for funding proposals, partnership materials, reports and strategic communications.
Media Engagement
Media relations will also form a significant part of the position. The officer will work with the Creative Director and Great Southern Reef Research Partnership to identify priority stories and develop media opportunities.
Responsibilities include building relationships with journalists, editors, producers and media organisations across print, digital, broadcast and specialist media.
The officer will develop media pitches, releases, briefs, background materials and media kits, while helping secure earned coverage across radio, television, podcasts, digital platforms and other relevant outlets.
They will also coordinate interviews and media opportunities for researchers, spokespeople and project partners and serve as a key media contact for the Foundation.
Who Should Apply?
The Foundation is looking for an individual with exceptional storytelling, writing and editorial skills and the ability to turn complex scientific information into engaging content.
Experience in science communication, journalism, media, communications or public relations would be valuable, particularly within marine, environmental, conservation or research organisations.
A strong understanding of marine science, conservation or environmental research is desirable, while knowledge of Australia’s temperate marine ecosystems would be an advantage.
Candidates should also demonstrate the ability to identify and pitch stories capable of securing earned media coverage.
Strong relationship-building skills are important because the role involves working with researchers, Traditional Owners, community organisations and project partners.
The Foundation is particularly interested in people who are naturally curious, proactive, organised and capable of working independently within a small remote team.
What Success Looks Like
Success in the position will be measured through increased media coverage of the Great Southern Reef, stronger relationships with science and environmental journalists, and high-quality editorial content that makes marine science accessible to diverse audiences.
The successful officer will also help identify storytelling opportunities earlier, increase profile opportunities for researchers and community voices, and create narratives that strengthen partnerships and support funding opportunities.
Ultimately, the role will contribute to greater public awareness and appreciation of the Great Southern Reef.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
This position offers communications professionals an opportunity to use their skills for meaningful environmental impact.
The successful candidate will work alongside marine scientists, filmmakers, educators and conservation practitioners while helping shape how Australians understand one of their country’s major natural assets.
Because the Foundation is a small and growing organisation, the role also provides an opportunity to contribute ideas, influence communications strategies and potentially grow with the organisation.
The position offers flexible remote working arrangements, a collaborative environment and the opportunity to contribute to conservation through powerful storytelling.
