About Equality Labs
Equality Labs is a social justice organization working to address caste oppression and other forms of structural inequality affecting South Asian communities. Its communications work plays an important role in bringing research, campaigns, community experiences, and movement-building initiatives to wider audiences.
The successful candidate will help ensure that Equality Labs’ public-facing communications are culturally informed, inclusive, strategic, and aligned with the organization’s broader goals. The role reports directly to the Executive Director and includes supervision of one team member.
Key Responsibilities
The Marketing & Communications Director will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy across the organization’s platforms.
A major part of the role involves managing digital communications, including newsletters, social media, press releases, websites, and other public-facing channels. The successful candidate will curate, edit, and publish content across platforms such as Facebook, X/Twitter, and Instagram while ensuring messaging remains consistent and engaging.
The Director will also lead media relations and outreach. Responsibilities include developing and maintaining a press list, coordinating media engagement around events and campaigns, responding to media inquiries, and supporting speaking opportunities for Equality Labs team members.
Another important responsibility is content production. The Director will produce press releases, collaborate with designers and internal teams to create digital assets, and provide editorial support for research reports. They will also support the launch of public-facing research projects and help communicate their findings effectively to broader audiences.
The position also includes project management responsibilities, including overseeing the distribution and marketing of Equality Labs’ two podcasts and supporting upcoming communications initiatives.

The successful candidate will join Equality Labs at an exciting time, with several public-facing initiatives planned. Upcoming projects include the launch of several reports, a Digital Security Learning Series, a Healing Justice/Mindfulness Series, and the launch of an Equality Labs merchandise store.
These projects provide an opportunity for the Director to shape communications strategies, develop compelling narratives, coordinate campaigns, and increase public engagement with the organization’s work.
Who Should Apply?
Equality Labs is looking for a communications professional with at least seven years of experience in marketing and/or communications, particularly on the client or agency side.
Candidates should have a strong background in media relations, stakeholder engagement, community engagement, and partner communications. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, as the position requires working across teams and producing polished, nuanced, and audience-appropriate content.
The organization is particularly interested in candidates who understand inclusive communications and can develop public narratives through an anti-oppression and healing justice lens.
Cultural competency and the ability to work respectfully with diverse stakeholders experiencing multiple forms of marginalization are also important. Knowledge of South Asian organizing and experience working with social justice movements would be an advantage.
