Technology professionals with experience in IT operations, business systems, data management, and automation can apply for the Manager, IT & Business Systems position at World Bicycle Relief (WBR). The full-time role is based in Chicago, Illinois, with a hybrid working arrangement.
The position offers an opportunity to work for a global nonprofit social enterprise using technology, data, and business systems to support programmes serving communities across multiple countries.
About World Bicycle Relief
World Bicycle Relief is a mission-driven organisation focused on improving mobility and economic opportunity in rural communities around the world.
Through its purpose-designed Buffalo Bicycles, the organisation helps people gain better access to education, healthcare, markets, employment, and other essential services.
WBR has distributed more than 1 million bicycles and trained over 4,000 community-based mechanics. Its programmes operate across numerous countries, supported by a global supply chain and teams working across different regions.
This international structure creates a need for reliable technology systems that allow teams to collaborate, manage information, communicate effectively, and make informed decisions.
About the Manager, IT & Business Systems Role
The Manager, IT & Business Systems will play a hands-on role in maintaining WBR’s technology infrastructure while improving the organisation’s business systems and data capabilities.
The successful candidate will balance immediate technology support with longer-term improvements.
This includes helping staff resolve technology issues, improving workflows, strengthening system integrations, supporting data quality, managing technology vendors, and identifying opportunities to responsibly use automation and artificial intelligence.
The role therefore requires both technical knowledge and strong interpersonal skills.
IT Operations and User Support
One of the central responsibilities will be managing day-to-day IT operations.
The Manager will oversee areas such as:
- User support and ticketing.
- Employee onboarding and offboarding.
- Access administration.
- Microsoft 365 support.
- Device coordination.
- Routine troubleshooting.
- Technology issue tracking and prioritisation.
- Documentation of support processes.
The successful candidate will need to provide service-oriented support while ensuring technology issues are properly documented and resolved within appropriate timeframes.
Business Systems and Integrations
The role also focuses heavily on business systems.
The Manager will work with different teams to understand their technology needs, identify inefficient processes, and develop practical solutions.
Responsibilities include supporting system integrations, APIs, automation, workflows, and data exchange processes.
Where more complex system improvements require external expertise, the Manager will coordinate with technology partners and vendors.
This makes the role suitable for someone who understands how different business platforms interact and can troubleshoot basic integration challenges.
Data, Reporting and AI
Data is another important part of the position.
The successful candidate will help improve the quality, accessibility, and usefulness of organisational data.
Responsibilities may include supporting:
- Reporting systems.
- Dashboards.
- Data validation.
- Data quality initiatives.
- Future data warehouse projects.
- Business intelligence activities.
- AI tools and connectors.
WBR is also interested in using AI and automation responsibly to improve productivity, communication, analysis, and decision-making.
Candidates who understand practical applications of AI in business environments could therefore bring additional value to the position.
Security and Technology Governance
The Manager will also contribute to WBR’s technology governance and security practices.
The position involves supporting access controls, data protection, business continuity planning, GDPR-related activities, vendor reviews, and responsible AI governance.
The successful candidate will work with legal, privacy, security, and external advisers where necessary.
Knowledge of cybersecurity controls, privacy compliance, vendor risk assessments, Data Processing Agreements, or Data Transfer Agreements would be advantageous.
Vendor and Partner Management
Technology operations often involve external suppliers, consultants, and service providers.
The Manager will be responsible for maintaining clear expectations, documentation, follow-up, and accountability across these relationships.
An important objective will be to make sure critical systems and processes remain sustainable and well documented rather than relying on one individual, vendor, or undocumented procedure.
Strong project coordination and organisational skills will therefore be essential.
Required Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Information Systems, Computer Science, Business Technology, or a related field, although equivalent practical experience may also be considered.
Candidates should have approximately 5–10 years of progressively responsible experience in IT operations, business systems, technology support, systems administration, or related areas.
Experience should include:
- Managing user support and ticketing systems.
- Access administration.
- Employee onboarding and offboarding.
- Day-to-day IT operations.
- Supporting business systems.
- Microsoft 365 or comparable platforms.
- System integrations and APIs.
- Data exchange or automation.
- Vendor and consultant management.
- Project coordination and documentation.
Strong communication skills are particularly important because the Manager must be able to translate technical concepts into practical business language.
Preferred Experience
While not all of these qualifications are mandatory, WBR would value candidates with experience supporting global or multi-country organisations.
Additional advantages include experience with ERP, CRM, HRIS, fundraising, finance, inventory, reporting, or business intelligence systems.
Experience with workflow automation, low-code platforms, API documentation, data governance, cybersecurity administration, GDPR, and AI tools can also strengthen an application.
Professionals who have worked in nonprofit, international development, or other mission-driven organisations may find their experience particularly relevant.
Work Location
The position is full-time and hybrid in Chicago, Illinois.
Although World Bicycle Relief operates internationally, this particular vacancy is not advertised as a fully remote global position. Candidates should therefore be prepared to work within the stated Chicago hybrid arrangement.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
The Manager, IT & Business Systems role offers technology professionals the chance to apply their skills within a mission-driven organisation with a global footprint.
Rather than focusing solely on technical infrastructure, the position combines IT operations, business systems, data, cybersecurity, automation, AI, vendor management, and organisational improvement.
The successful candidate can directly contribute to improving how teams across WBR operate and collaborate while supporting an organisation working to expand access to mobility and economic opportunity.
For experienced IT and business systems professionals seeking to combine technology expertise with social impact, the World Bicycle Relief Manager, IT & Business Systems opportunity provides a broad and potentially rewarding career path.
