Limelight Foundation is a philanthropic organisation based in Amsterdam and described as Europe’s leading journalism fund. Founded in 2021, the organisation focuses on strengthening Europe’s information infrastructure by supporting journalism, protections for journalists and organisations working to hold technology platforms accountable.
With support from a growing community of donors, Limelight has made more than 120 donations totalling approximately €28 million and currently supports 59 active grantee partnerships. Its work helps expand access to independent news for more than 500 million Europeans.
As the foundation plans to expand its support for journalism and information infrastructure, effective communications will play an important role in attracting new donors and communicating the organisation’s impact.
About the Communications Officer Role
The Communications Officer will be a mid-level member of Limelight’s growing team and will contribute directly to the organisation’s fundraising and communications strategy.
Working closely with senior colleagues and the wider team, the successful candidate will develop persuasive communications that explain why Limelight’s work matters and demonstrate its impact to existing and potential funders.
The role involves storytelling, digital communications, content production, media monitoring, brand management and annual reporting.
Key Responsibilities
The Communications Officer will be responsible for:
- Collecting stories from grantee organisations and turning technical outcomes into accessible and persuasive narratives.
- Developing donor-facing materials such as impact reports and fundraising pitch materials.
- Managing and strategically developing the organisation’s website, social media channels and sector publications.
- Writing, editing and proofreading external communications.
- Ensuring consistent use of the Limelight brand across communications.
- Monitoring European media funding and philanthropy trends to identify opportunities and inform messaging.
- Contributing to the organisation’s broader communications strategy and developing social media or online communications guidelines where required.
- Managing the production and dissemination of the annual report.
- Coordinating with grantees, board members, designers, editors and external consultants.
- Tracking communications performance against fundraising objectives.
- Responding to incoming enquiries and undertaking other duties related to the position.
Who Can Apply?
Limelight is looking for a communications professional with 3–5 years of experience in communications or a related field.
Applicants should have a strong understanding of strategic communications, audience development, messaging and communication channels. Excellent written English is essential, particularly the ability to produce persuasive content for different audiences without using generative AI.
The successful candidate should also have experience creating, editing and distributing different types of communications, including social media content, website articles, impact stories, annual reports and organisational updates.
Experience with Webflow, Canva, Photoshop and publishing software is also required.
Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, initiative, flexibility and personal integrity are important for this position. Applicants should also demonstrate a genuine commitment to Limelight Foundation’s mission.
Experience in the nonprofit or philanthropic sector is desirable, as is knowledge of another European language.
Salary and Benefits
The position offers a salary of €46,350 to €54,075 per year, based on full-time employment, depending on experience and background.
The successful candidate will receive a one-year contract, with the intention of extending it by mutual agreement. Other benefits include a generous pension scheme, 27 days of annual leave based on full-time employment, an 8% holiday allowance, paid lunch breaks, commuting support and opportunities for professional development.
The position is hybrid, with employees expected to work at least two days per week from Limelight’s central Amsterdam office and remotely for the remainder of the week, subject to organisational and individual needs.
