The International Institute of Humanitarian Law is an independent, non-profit humanitarian organization established in 1970 in Sanremo, Italy. The Institute is globally recognized for delivering specialized training in international humanitarian law, human rights, refugee law, and related disciplines.
Through high-level conferences, seminars, and expert dialogues, the Institute facilitates exchange among government officials, scholars, practitioners, and international organizations. It holds:

- Observer status at the Executive Committee of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees

About the Department
The Department of International Refugee Law and Migration Law strengthens the knowledge and technical capacity of stakeholders working with refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), stateless individuals, and migrants.
Through training initiatives and cross-sector dialogue, the Department promotes the protection of human rights and complements the efforts of governments, civil society actors, and international agencies engaged in protection and migration governance.
Purpose of the Role
The International Intern will work within the Executive Unit (Office of the Director) to support the Department’s institutional engagement and strategic monitoring functions.
The role centers on delivering daily and ad-hoc analytical briefings on global developments related to refugee protection and forced displacement, including crises triggered by armed conflict and disasters.
This internship provides first-hand exposure to senior-level institutional engagement within a globally respected humanitarian organization. It is designed to equip emerging professionals with analytical, writing, and policy-monitoring skills relevant to careers in the international sector.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The Intern will:
- Conduct daily monitoring of global and regional news outlets, as well as reports from international organizations
- Produce concise executive briefings on developments in refugee protection and forced displacement
- Deliver ad-hoc political and situational analyses on specific countries or regions
- Present summaries of positions and statements delivered by States and organizations at international fora, particularly within the United Nations system
- Track the publication of reports and policy documents relevant to the Department’s online learning platform
- Monitor and map grant and funding opportunities from institutional and private donors aligned with the Department’s mandate
- Contribute to drafting the Department’s newsletter
- Support the organization of alumni and lecturer engagement events
Required Qualifications and Experience
Candidates must:
- Be currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Social Sciences, International Relations, Political Science, Communications, or a related field
- Demonstrate fluency in English with exceptional professional writing, editing, and proofreading skills
- Show the ability to monitor and synthesize global and regional developments into structured executive briefings
- Be capable of managing multiple tasks under tight deadlines while maintaining strong attention to detail
- Work effectively in multicultural and international environments
Desirable Qualifications
Preference may be given to candidates who demonstrate:
- Working knowledge of additional UN languages
- Experience drafting articles, op-eds, or thematic reports for international audiences
- Proficiency with digital collaboration platforms and newsletter or website management tools
- A demonstrated commitment to refugee protection, migration governance, and human rights advocacy
Working Conditions
- Full-time, remote internship
- Flexible scheduling to accommodate academic obligations and examination periods
- Potential missions to Sanremo and Geneva
- Completion of the internship does not guarantee employment; however, high-performing interns receive priority consideration for future vacancies within the Department
