Position Overview
Susan G. Komen is seeking a Development Director for the Houston, TX area to lead and execute community-based fundraising initiatives, primarily focused on the organization’s signature events, the MORE THAN PINK Walk™ and Race for the Cure®. This is a full-time, remote role within the United States, but candidates must be located in or near Houston, TX, and be willing to travel locally (up to 30%) as required.

The Development Director will serve as both a team leader and a strategic fundraiser, overseeing 1–2 direct reports and coordinating with regional and national fundraising teams. This role requires a hands-on approach to achieve ambitious revenue goals while mentoring and guiding staff to deliver effective, mission-driven results.

Key Responsibilities

Fundraising Leadership & Execution

  • Develop and implement a year-round fundraising plan to meet revenue targets for the Houston market.
  • Oversee the execution of MORE THAN PINK Walk™ / Race for the Cure® events, including prospecting, cultivating, and soliciting corporate sponsors, top fundraisers, and donor teams.
  • Drive other revenue-generating activities, such as individual giving, major gifts, corporate engagement, and special events.
  • Maintain a pipeline of potential sponsors and donors while securing high-dollar corporate partnerships for market events.
  • Collaborate with the national corporate partnership team to engage and activate national partners.
  • Build strong relationships with top fundraisers, volunteer leaders, sponsors, and donors to inspire engagement and maximize revenue.
  • Track progress and maintain accountability for revenue goals, event timelines, and team performance.
  • Work with the Executive Director to identify and cultivate potential major gift prospects.

Team Management & Community Engagement

  • Hire, train, and supervise community fundraising staff, serving as a player-coach to ensure team success.
  • Provide guidance on tactical execution and help team members meet both individual and collective goals.
  • Foster productive relationships across the organization, including cross-functional collaboration with other Community Development staff.
  • Represent Susan G. Komen in local communities, promoting the organization’s mission and programs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5–7 years of experience in fundraising, special events, and team management.
  • Proven track record of raising $1M+ in revenue through corporate sponsorships, peer-to-peer fundraising, and major gifts.
  • Strong experience in face-to-face fundraising, executive volunteer recruitment, and corporate partnership management.
  • Excellent planning, organizational, and follow-up skills; ability to manage multiple projects with varying priorities.
  • Professional demeanor with the ability to engage high-net-worth donors, executive corporate leaders, and volunteers.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and presenting to diverse audiences.
  • Familiarity with the Houston community and local nonprofit landscape.
  • Willingness and ability to travel locally and work evenings or weekends as needed.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $74,000 – $100,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications.
