ITU Unpaid Internship in Circular Economy and Climate Change: Home-Based Opportunity | Apply by 24 September 2026

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is offering an Unpaid Internship in Circular Economy and Climate Change, providing an opportunity for students and recent graduates interested in environmental sustainability, climate change, circular economy and green ICT. The internship is home-based, runs for six months, and is open to external candidates.

The opportunity is particularly relevant for individuals who want to gain practical experience at the intersection of digital technology, environmental governance and sustainable development. Applications must be submitted by 24 September 2026 at midnight Geneva time.

About the Internship

The internship will support activities addressing the growing environmental impact of the information and communication technology (ICT) sector. Key areas include electronic waste (e-waste), greenhouse gas emissions, green data centres, sustainable procurement and green ICT standards.

The role is connected to work supporting countries in the Asia and Pacific region as governments and industries increasingly adopt policies and practices aimed at addressing climate change and promoting circular economy principles.

The successful intern will work under the supervision of the focal point for the Environment Thematic Priority and collaborate with colleagues in the regional office and headquarters environment team.

Key Responsibilities

The intern will contribute to a range of environmental and climate-related activities. Responsibilities include supporting the preparation and implementation of projects covering e-waste regulation, e-waste data collection, greenhouse gas emissions data, green data centres, circular and sustainable public procurement for ICT, and green ICT standards.

The intern will also assist with activities promoting the participation of Asia and Pacific countries in standardization work, particularly through ITU-T Study Group 5, which focuses on environment, electromagnetic fields and circular economy.

Other responsibilities include helping organize meetings and workshops, supporting awareness-raising activities, contributing to partnership-building and resource-mobilization efforts, and participating in stakeholder consultations involving public and private sector organizations.

The position also provides an opportunity to develop research and data-management skills. The intern will help maintain and update databases covering e-waste regulations and greenhouse gas emissions from the ICT sector and may conduct research on environmental regulations, emissions data, green data centres, sustainable procurement and green ICT standards.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants should have knowledge of environmental issues, particularly circular economy and climate change. Familiarity with online applications and social media is useful, while willingness to learn is also considered. Candidates should be able to produce clear and concise written documentation and demonstrate good written and oral communication skills. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with colleagues are also important.

For education, applicants should have a university degree or be completing an advanced university degree in global environmental governance, sustainable development, environmental studies or an equivalent relevant field. No previous work experience is required, making the internship suitable for eligible students and recent graduates seeking to build professional experience. Advanced English is required.

Internship Requirements

Candidates must meet specific internship eligibility requirements. Applicants should be under 30 years of age, although exceptions may be considered for candidates pursuing a PhD. They must also currently be enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or postgraduate programme, or be a recent graduate within six months before the start of the internship.

In addition, applicants must be citizens of an ITU Member State.

Is the Internship Paid?

This is an unpaid internship. Interns should therefore be prepared to cover expenses associated with medical insurance, travel, accommodation and living costs, unless these are covered by their sponsoring institution.

Despite being unpaid, the opportunity can provide valuable exposure to international environmental and ICT policy work, research, stakeholder engagement and sustainable development initiatives.

How to Apply

Interested candidates must complete an online application and provide complete and accurate information. The recruitment process may include assessments, tests and a competency-based interview. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and candidates reaching the final selection stage may undergo reference checks.
