The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is seeking an experienced communications professional for the position of Senior Communications Officer to lead strategic communications for the What Works to Prevent Violence – Impact at Scale Programme (What Works II).

This hybrid, full-time opportunity is available for candidates based in London, United Kingdom, or Nairobi, Kenya, who have the legal right to work in these locations. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping global communications around preventing violence against women and girls (VAWG) and supporting evidence-based advocacy efforts.

The position offers a salary range of £52,210–£61,999 per year and is ideal for professionals with strong experience in humanitarian communications, advocacy, digital media, and strategic storytelling.

Senior Communications Officer Responsibilities

The successful candidate will lead communications strategies that strengthen awareness, advocacy, and engagement around violence prevention efforts.

Key responsibilities include:

Leading Strategic Communications and Advocacy

The role will serve as a communications link between research teams, implementation partners, and external audiences.

Responsibilities include:

• Developing communication strategies for programme evidence and research findings.
• Creating audience-focused materials such as reports, policy briefs, presentations, and media content.
• Supporting advocacy and influencing initiatives.
• Working with programme teams to identify important stories, trends, and achievements.

Developing Narratives and Strategic Messaging

The Senior Communications Officer will help shape the programme’s public voice and messaging.

Duties include:

• Translating complex research into clear and accessible content.
• Developing communication frameworks.
• Supporting leadership with speeches, presentations, and opinion pieces.
• Creating messaging for major events, campaigns, and programme milestones.

Managing Crisis Communications

The position will support IRC’s ability to respond effectively during sensitive situations.

Producing Digital and Multimedia Content

Required Qualifications and Experience

IRC is looking for candidates with strong communications expertise and experience in humanitarian or development environments.

Applicants should have:

• A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, English, or a related field.
• 6–8 years of professional experience in communications roles.
• Experience creating public-facing communications materials.
• Experience using social media for advocacy and engagement.
• Knowledge of humanitarian or development programming.
• Experience managing digital communications platforms.
• Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills.

Additional experience with donor-funded programmes, digital analytics, graphic design, photography, and video production will be an advantage.
