Role Responsibilities
The Senior Fundraiser will be responsible for developing and managing IOI’s fundraising activities while working closely with the Director of Development.
Key responsibilities include:
Building Fundraising Pipelines
The successful candidate will research and identify potential funding partners that align with IOI’s goals.
Responsibilities include:
- Identifying foundations offering unrestricted or general operating support.
- Building and maintaining a strong fundraising pipeline.
- Researching new philanthropic opportunities.
- Tracking donor engagement activities.
- Maintaining accurate fundraising records.
- Conducting regular outreach to potential funders.
The role requires excellent research skills and the ability to identify strategic funding opportunities.
Managing Donor and Funder Relationships
The Senior Fundraiser will support IOI’s engagement with foundations and private donors.
Duties include:
- Leading initial communication with prospective funders.
- Conducting introductory fundraising discussions.
- Preparing opportunities for leadership engagement.
- Maintaining relationships throughout the fundraising process.
The successful candidate will help strengthen IOI’s network of supporters and funding partners.
Developing Grant Applications
The role will involve preparing high-quality fundraising documents, including:
- Letters of Inquiry (LOIs).
- Concept notes.
- Grant proposals.
- Leadership briefing documents.
Candidates should have strong writing skills and the ability to communicate organisational impact effectively to funders.
Expected Outcomes
The successful Senior Fundraiser will contribute to measurable fundraising growth.
Within the first three months, the candidate is expected to:
- Build a pipeline of 30–50 qualified foundation prospects.
- Establish a structured fundraising outreach strategy.
- Maintain weekly contact with new funding prospects.
- Complete introductory discussions with potential donors.
Within six months, the candidate should:
- Maintain active conversations with multiple funders.
- Submit grant proposals and funding applications.
- Expand IOI’s fundraising network.
Within six to twelve months, the goal will be to secure new philanthropic commitments and create a sustainable fundraising system.
Required Qualifications
Applicants should have significant experience in nonprofit fundraising and donor engagement.
Candidates should have:
- 7–10+ years of nonprofit fundraising experience.
- Proven success securing philanthropic funding.
- Experience developing fundraising strategies from the ground up.
- Experience managing large grants valued between US$150,000 and US$1 million.
- Excellent proposal writing and communication skills.
- Strong prospect research abilities.
- Ability to work independently in a remote global environment.
Knowledge of open science, digital public goods, or research infrastructure will be an advantage.
Preferred Experience
Additional experience that will strengthen an application includes:
- Working with European foundations or funding programmes.
- Experience with government funding mechanisms.
- International fundraising experience.
- Managing relationships with global stakeholders.
Remote Work Benefits and Conditions
IOI provides a flexible remote working environment where team members collaborate across different countries and time zones.
The successful applicant should be available to work during shared collaboration hours between 12:00 pm and 5:00 pm BST/GMT.
This is an independent contractor position, meaning the selected candidate will manage their own taxes and will not receive employee benefits such as health insurance, paid leave, or retirement contributions.
