INTERSOS, an independent humanitarian organization, is seeking a Security Coordinator to lead and oversee security management across its missions in various locations. The Security Coordinator ensures staff safety, operational continuity, and compliance with INTERSOS risk management protocols while providing strategic guidance on security and crisis management.

Role Overview

The Security Coordinator reports to the Head of Mission and supervises the mission’s security team. The role is responsible for developing and implementing security strategies, providing technical support, and ensuring that security structures and systems are operational and adhered to. The position is a six-month contract starting 1 April 2026, with duties located according to the country of assignment.

Key objectives include:

  • Designing and implementing mission security policies and strategies.
  • Advising senior management on security risks and mitigation measures.
  • Ensuring the safety of staff and continuity of operations.
  • Providing leadership during security incidents and crises.

Key Responsibilities

Security Strategy and Risk Management

  • Conduct country risk assessments to identify threats and develop mitigation measures.
  • Implement risk management tools, policies, and procedures across the mission.
  • Maintain strategic situational awareness of staff, partners, and operational environments.
  • Collect and analyze security incident data and humanitarian access impediments.

Staff Management and Networking

  • Recruit, train, and mentor security staff, including Field Security Officers and focal points.
  • Build relationships with local and national authorities, UN agencies, NGOs, and community leaders.
  • Strengthen inter-agency communication and maintain a network of security stakeholders.

Communication and Procedures

  • Improve internal security coordination mechanisms and information flow.
  • Ensure staff are informed about security procedures, SOPs, and contingency plans.
  • Conduct briefings on access, safety, and security for all staff members.
  • Maintain security documentation and communication platforms.

Incident and Crisis Management

  • Ensure contingency plans and SOPs are up to date and understood by all staff.
  • Lead responses during security incidents, supporting the Head of Mission in decision-making.
  • Provide guidance and support to staff during crises and ensure operational continuity.

Required Profile and Experience

Education

  • University degree in Social Sciences, Psychology, Social Work, Human Rights, International Humanitarian Law, or related fields.
  • Master’s degree in humanitarian studies, risk management, or related fields is highly desirable.

Professional Experience

  • Minimum of 4 years in security coordination or management in complex humanitarian crises.
  • Understanding of humanitarian principles and experience in humanitarian negotiation and access is desirable.

Languages and Skills

  • Proficiency in English and French.
  • Strong interpersonal, teamwork, networking, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, remotely, and in multicultural teams.
  • Strategic thinking, innovation, and creativity in security and risk management.

Personal Attributes

  • Ability to work in remote field locations under challenging conditions.
  • First Aid Trainer-of-Trainers (ToT) qualification desirable.
  • Experience in critical incident management preferred.
