Position Overview
The Marine Intern position is based in Beijing and is structured as a hybrid role combining remote and in-office work. The intern will contribute to ICCT’s China-focused maritime research portfolio, with a particular emphasis on shipping electrification and decarbonization strategies. This role offers an opportunity for students and early-career professionals to gain hands-on experience in applied research within the nonprofit and environmental policy sector.
The intern will work under the guidance of experienced researchers and contribute to ongoing projects that examine how the maritime industry can transition toward cleaner energy systems. The position is particularly suited to individuals interested in climate policy, sustainable transportation, and energy transitions within the shipping sector.
Key Responsibilities
The Marine Intern will support a range of research and project activities. Responsibilities include:
- Participating in research initiatives related to maritime decarbonization, including shipping electrification and alternative fuels
- Conducting technical research and supporting quantitative analysis using established methodologies
- Assisting in the collection, organization, and interpretation of data relevant to maritime emissions and energy use
- Supporting the preparation of research outputs, including reports, policy briefs, and technical documents
- Translating research materials and reports between Chinese and English as needed
- Assisting in the development of communication materials to support project dissemination
- Collaborating with team members on project coordination and administrative tasks
- Undertaking additional duties aligned with project needs and organizational priorities
Through these activities, the intern will gain exposure to both the analytical and operational dimensions of international environmental research.
Required Qualifications
Candidates are expected to meet the following criteria:
- Enrollment as a senior undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited institution
- Academic specialization in marine engineering, environmental science, environmental engineering, or a closely related discipline
- Familiarity with shipping electrification, renewable energy technologies, or decarbonization strategies is preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Experience or basic competency in data analysis tools such as R, Python, or Tableau is considered an asset
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in both Chinese and English
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a team environment
- Availability to work at least three days per week
- Commitment to a minimum internship duration of six months
