About HelpAge International

HelpAge International is a global organisation working with a network of approximately 200 organisations across 99 countries to promote the rights and wellbeing of older people.

Its work focuses on helping older people lead dignified, healthy and secure lives while promoting inclusion and systemic change. Through its 2030 Strategy, Ageing in a Just World, the organisation seeks to ensure that older people’s wellbeing, dignity and voices are reflected in the development of societies and communities.

The organisation works according to four core values: impact, learning, partnership and inclusion.

About the Programme Support Department

The Programme Support Department supports HelpAge’s humanitarian and resilience programmes, with an emphasis on ensuring that older people, people with disabilities and other at-risk populations are included in emergency responses.

The department works through effective programme delivery, partnerships and accountability to provide timely and inclusive assistance to communities affected by crises.

The Project Accountant will therefore play an important role in ensuring that humanitarian programme finances are accurately managed and properly accounted for.

What Will the Project Accountant Do?

The Project Accountant will manage the accounts of the Venezuela Emergency Response Project, ensuring that financial information remains accurate, organised and up to date.

The role will also support HelpAge’s programmes in Venezuela and Colombia, helping ensure that financial processes comply with international standards, organisational procedures and local legislation.

One of the key responsibilities will be supporting the preparation of project proposals and budgets. The accountant will work with finance business partners to ensure that financial planning reflects programme requirements.

The successful candidate will also review expenditure forecasts from implementing partners before preparing fund requests for approval.

Financial Monitoring and Partner Management

A significant part of the position involves working with implementing partners.

The Project Accountant will review partners’ expenditure reports, ensure appropriate approvals are obtained and record expenditure within HelpAge’s accounting system.

The accountant will also check that project expenditure has been correctly coded against approved budgets and that supporting documentation has been submitted correctly.

For funds transferred to partners, the successful candidate will verify exchange-rate information and ensure that exchange rates used in expenditure reporting are accurate.

These responsibilities are essential for maintaining financial transparency and reducing financial risks in humanitarian programmes.

Reporting and Reconciliation

The Project Accountant will prepare Project Financial Monitoring Reports (PMRs) and analyse financial variances.

This will involve working with project managers to understand differences between planned and actual expenditure and identify any issues requiring action.

The role will also involve preparing monthly debtor balances for implementing partners and ensuring that financial risks are identified and mitigated.

Additional responsibilities include preparing Equals Card reconciliations, posting information into the accounting system and supporting the Global Finance Team with reconciliation of control accounts.

Through these activities, the accountant will contribute to accurate financial reporting and stronger financial decision-making across HelpAge’s programmes.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants should have a degree in accounting, while postgraduate studies in finance are desirable.

The position requires at least five years of demonstrated accounting management experience in the public, private, humanitarian or development sectors.

Candidates should also have experience working with international cooperation programmes or projects funded by international donors, as well as experience working with implementing partners.

Experience using accounting software is required, while strong Microsoft Office skills are also essential.

Knowledge of Latin American and Caribbean legislation will be important because the role supports programmes operating in the region.

Language and Personal Skills

Fluency in both written and spoken Spanish and English is essential.

The successful candidate must also be able to handle confidential financial information with discretion and maintain high standards of professional integrity.

HelpAge is looking for someone who can work independently, organise their workload and operate with minimal supervision.

A proactive attitude, strong teamwork abilities and a genuine commitment to humanitarian causes are also important.

Experience working with partners during emergency responses in the LAC region would be an advantage.

Candidates should also have the ability to travel within the region when required and ideally have the right to live and work in the LAC region.

Safeguarding and Accountability

HelpAge International places strong emphasis on safeguarding and maintaining a respectful workplace.

Everyone working with the organisation is expected to contribute to an environment where people are protected from harm, abuse and maltreatment.

The organisation may conduct appropriate criminal record checks to help ensure that individuals engaged in its work do not pose safeguarding risks.
