About the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)

The Inter-Parliamentary Union is the global organization of national parliaments and was founded in 1889 as the world’s first multilateral political organization.

Today, IPU brings together 183 national Member Parliaments and 15 regional parliamentary bodies, working to strengthen democracy, human rights, peace, sustainable development, and political cooperation.

The organization supports parliaments and parliamentarians in addressing global challenges while promoting inclusive governance and stronger democratic institutions.

Gender equality is a central focus of IPU’s work. The organization supports efforts to increase women’s political participation, strengthen women’s leadership, and help parliaments become more gender-sensitive institutions.

About the Gender Partnership Programme

Through its Gender Partnership Programme, IPU works to advance women’s political participation and leadership while addressing barriers that prevent women from fully participating in decision-making processes.
