IDEA Ireland Is Hiring a Communications Manager — Earn €49,522–€55,737 Per Year in a Strategic Global Citizenship Education Role

Professionals with strong communications, public engagement, advocacy, and storytelling experience have an opportunity to take on a strategic role within Ireland’s development education sector. The Irish Development Education Association (IDEA) is recruiting a Communications Manager to lead its strategic communications and public engagement work and strengthen awareness of Global Citizenship Education across Ireland.

The full-time position is based in Dublin, Ireland, with a hybrid working arrangement. The successful candidate will report directly to the CEO and play an important role in communicating IDEA’s work to members, educators, policymakers, funders, media, partners, and the wider public.

About IDEA

The Irish Development Education Association is Ireland’s national network for Development Education and Global Citizenship Education (GCE).

IDEA represents more than 100 members working across formal, non-formal, and informal education settings. Its work focuses on strengthening understanding of Global Citizenship Education and its contribution to building a more equal, just, and sustainable future.

The organisation is supported by partners including Irish Aid, Concern Worldwide, and Trócaire.

For a communications professional, the position provides an opportunity to work at the intersection of communications, education, international development, policy, advocacy, and civil society.

About the Communications Manager Role

The Communications Manager will combine strategic leadership with hands-on communications delivery.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing communications plans that support IDEA’s strategic priorities, campaigns, programmes, and public engagement activities.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and implementing IDEA’s communications strategy.
  • Creating annual communications plans.
  • Advising the CEO and colleagues on communications issues.
  • Maintaining consistent organisational messaging and visual identity.
  • Increasing awareness of Global Citizenship Education.
  • Monitoring and evaluating communications performance.
  • Developing engaging content for different audiences.
  • Communicating organisational impact through stories, evidence, and case studies.
  • Supporting campaigns, events, publications, and programmes.
  • Strengthening member engagement and showcasing members’ work.
  • Communicating policy, research, and advocacy in accessible formats.
  • Overseeing website, email, and social media communications.
  • Building relationships with media, partners, and external stakeholders.
  • Using analytics and audience insights to improve communications.
  • Managing external communications suppliers where required.

The role may also include line management responsibilities and oversight of communications planning, editorial calendars, workflows, and budgets.

A Role Combining Strategy and Creativity

This position is suited to someone who can move comfortably between strategic planning and practical content production.

The Communications Manager will need to understand how communications can support organisational goals while also producing clear, compelling, and accessible content.

A major part of the role will involve translating complex subjects—including policy, research, evidence, and programme learning—into communications that different audiences can understand.

This could involve communicating with educators, policymakers, civil society organisations, funders, journalists, members, and the general public.

Strong storytelling will therefore be essential. Candidates should be able to demonstrate how they have used evidence, case studies, data, and human stories to communicate impact.

Candidate Requirements

IDEA is seeking an experienced communications professional with at least five years of relevant experience in communications, public affairs, public engagement, or a related field.

The successful candidate should demonstrate:

  • Experience developing and implementing communications strategies.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
  • Experience communicating complex issues to diverse audiences.
  • Experience managing websites, email, and social media.
  • Strong stakeholder, partner, and media relationship-building skills.
  • Experience delivering multi-channel communications.
  • Strong project and organisational management abilities.
  • Experience managing staff or external suppliers.
  • Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Strong strategic judgement and influencing abilities.
  • An understanding of, or strong interest in, Global Citizenship Education, international development, education, or the not-for-profit sector.

Experience within a membership organisation or network would be advantageous. Candidates with experience communicating policy, research, and advocacy are also encouraged to highlight this in their applications.

Knowledge of Ireland’s civil society, education, or international development sectors would be an additional advantage.

Salary and Benefits

The Communications Manager position offers a salary of €49,522 to €55,737 per year, depending on experience.

The package also includes a 6.5% employer pension contribution and 25 days of annual leave plus public holidays.

The role follows a hybrid working arrangement, typically involving two days per week in IDEA’s Dublin office, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Additional attendance may be required for meetings, events, or other organisational needs.

IDEA also highlights opportunities for professional development and a supportive, collaborative, and flexible working environment.

The organisation prefers a full-time appointment but will consider applications from candidates seeking a four-day working week.

Contract and Career Opportunity

The position is offered as a one-year fixed-term contract, with the intention that it may become an ongoing or permanent position subject to funding and organisational priorities.

This provides an opportunity for an experienced communications professional to make a direct contribution to the development and visibility of Ireland’s national network for Global Citizenship Education.

The position could be particularly valuable for someone who wants to combine communications expertise with work related to education, international development, policy, advocacy, and social impact.

How to Apply

Candidates should submit their application by email to recruitment@ideaonline.ie using the subject line “Communications role.”

Applications should include:

  • A current CV.
  • A cover letter of no more than two pages.

The cover letter should explain the candidate’s motivation for applying, relevant experience and achievements, how their skills meet the requirements, and how they would approach the role and contribute to IDEA’s work.

Applications should be submitted in Microsoft Word or PDF format.

Candidates are encouraged to apply early because applications will be reviewed as they are received, and IDEA may invite candidates to interviews before the closing date.

Application Deadline

The application deadline is 9:00am Irish time on Thursday, 17 September 2026.

Candidates interested in the opportunity should review the full job description and application requirements carefully before submitting their materials.

Final Thoughts

The IDEA Communications Manager position offers an opportunity for an experienced communications professional to use strategic communications, digital storytelling, media engagement, and public engagement to advance Global Citizenship Education.

With responsibility for communications strategy, digital platforms, research communications, stakeholder engagement, media relationships, and organisational visibility, the role is broader than a traditional content position. It requires someone who can provide strategic advice while also delivering high-quality communications.

For communications professionals passionate about education, international development, civil society, and social change, this hybrid Dublin-based opportunity could provide a meaningful platform to contribute to a national network working toward a more equal, just, and sustainable future.
