UN Human Rights Council Seeks Independent Experts with Extensive Human Rights Experience | Apply by October 20, 2026

The United Nations Human Rights Council is inviting applications from highly experienced human rights professionals for several independent expert and mandate holder positions. The opportunities are designed for individuals with extensive, recognized expertise in human rights and a strong understanding of the specific issues covered by each mandate.

Four vacancies are currently open, including positions focused on the rights of Indigenous Peoples, extrajudicial executions and the rights of people of African descent. The appointments are expected to be made during the 64th session of the Human Rights Council, scheduled to take place from 22 February to 2 April 2027.

The application deadline is October 20, 2026, at 12 noon Geneva time, with early applications strongly encouraged.

Available Human Rights Expert Positions

The current vacancies include four mandate holder positions:

  • Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples – Member from Africa
  • Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples – Member from North America
  • Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions
  • Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent – Member from African States

The appointment to the Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent is subject to the Human Rights Council extending the relevant mandate.

These positions provide experienced professionals with an opportunity to contribute to international human rights monitoring, research, reporting, consultations and advice.

About the Independent Expert Roles

The Human Rights Council’s special procedures are made up of independent human rights experts who investigate, report and provide advice on human rights issues from either a thematic or country-specific perspective.

Depending on the mandate, an expert may serve individually as a Special Rapporteur or Independent Expert, or as part of a five-member working group representing the United Nations regional groups.

The experts are appointed by the Human Rights Council and serve in their personal capacities. They are independent from the United Nations Secretariat and are not United Nations staff members.

Subsidiary expert mechanisms, meanwhile, provide specialized expertise to the Council through activities such as research, studies, advice and the development of best practices.

Who Can Apply?

These opportunities are aimed at professionals with extensive recognized professional experience and expertise in human rights.

Applicants should have a strong understanding of the particular human rights issues associated with the mandate for which they are applying. The selection process places importance on professional expertise, independence, integrity and the ability to effectively carry out the responsibilities of the position.

For positions within working groups and certain expert mechanisms, eligibility can also depend on nationality and the United Nations regional group associated with the vacancy.

For the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, candidates must represent one of the Indigenous sociocultural regions for which vacancies have been advertised.

Applicants should therefore carefully review the mandate-specific requirements and application instructions before submitting their applications.

Key Responsibilities

Successful mandate holders will be expected to undertake a range of international human rights responsibilities.

These may include participating in Human Rights Council and working group sessions in Geneva, conducting country missions and preparing reports according to established deadlines.

Experts may also organize and participate in consultations and meetings, communicate with governments and other stakeholders regarding alleged human rights violations, and provide advice to States and relevant stakeholders on matters connected to their mandate.

The role requires professionals who can analyze complex human rights issues, communicate findings clearly and work independently with a wide range of stakeholders.

Mandate holders should be able to dedicate an estimated four to six months per year to their work, depending on the workload associated with their mandate.

Are These Paid Positions?

These are unremunerated United Nations expert positions.

Mandate holders do not receive a salary or other financial compensation for their work. However, they may receive travel expenses and daily subsistence allowance as experts on mission when carrying out official responsibilities.

They are also not based in United Nations offices in Geneva or another United Nations duty station.

This makes the opportunities particularly relevant to senior human rights professionals who are motivated by international public service and the opportunity to contribute their expertise to global human rights protection.

How to Apply

Applicants must complete two components of the application process by the deadline.

First, candidates must submit the required online survey.

Second, applicants must complete and submit the mandate-specific Word application form. The application instructions and relevant forms are available through the official Human Rights Council selection process.

Candidates should carefully follow the instructions to ensure that their applications are complete. Incomplete applications may not be considered.
