Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT) is inviting applications from qualified migration and human rights legal experts to provide legal advice and support to journalists and media professionals who are at risk and may need to relocate from crisis and conflict regions.

The consultancy will support MiCT’s Critical Voices Fellowship, a programme designed to assist media professionals who face security risks because of their journalistic work. About Media in Cooperation and Transition

Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT) is a non-profit organisation focused on media development and protection. The organisation works across three continents and 15 countries, supporting journalists and media producers, strengthening media programmes, conducting research and monitoring, and helping partners improve their financial sustainability.

Through the Critical Voices Fellowship, MiCT supports media professionals from conflict and crisis regions who are committed to professional journalistic integrity. The legal expert will play an important role in helping at-risk Fellows understand and manage the legal requirements associated with relocation.

Key Responsibilities

The successful consultant will provide legal guidance based on the individual circumstances of Fellows. Responsibilities will include:

  • Assessing the personal situations of individual Fellows and providing appropriate legal advice.
  • Supporting Fellows with visa applications, including work, humanitarian and other relevant visas.
  • Helping prepare accurate and complete visa documentation.
  • Advising the MiCT team on visa application processes and requirements in different countries.
  • Preparing Fellows for visa interviews.
  • Providing advice on work permit and relocation requirements where necessary.

The consultancy will operate on a freelance, ad-hoc basis, depending on the needs of Fellows. Contracts are expected to run from September 2026 until June 2027, and there is no guaranteed minimum number of working hours.

Who Can Apply?

MiCT is looking for an experienced professional with strong knowledge of international migration and human rights law. Applicants should be able to demonstrate experience handling complex and sensitive legal cases and supporting individuals through migration processes.

  • Specialist knowledge of migration and human rights law globally.

How Applications Will Be Evaluated

Knowledge of relevant migration and human rights law globally carries a 20% weighting, while experience developing relevant visa documentation accounts for 30%. Experience working with at-risk journalists carries another 20%, and the proposed daily rate accounts for 30%.

Regional knowledge and additional working languages may also strengthen an application within the relevant evaluation criteria.

Shortlisted applicants may be invited to a short interview before the final selection. Applicants should also note that their offers must remain valid and binding for 60 days after the submission deadline.

Interested candidates should submit their applications by email to fellowship@mict-international.org using the subject line “Legal Expert.”

Applications must include:

  • A current CV.
  • Two professional references.
  • A fee structure, including hourly rates for ad-hoc Fellow legal counselling.
  • Fees for developing full visa documentation for humanitarian visa/asylum applications and work or student visas.

Why This Consultancy Matters

For journalists working in conflict and crisis environments, relocation can be essential for personal safety and professional survival. However, navigating international migration systems can be complex, particularly when individuals require humanitarian protection or need to secure permission to work in another country.

This consultancy provides an opportunity for an experienced legal professional to use their expertise to support journalists facing these challenges. By helping Fellows understand their legal options and prepare strong applications, the consultant will contribute to safer pathways for media professionals forced into exile.

Qualified migration and human rights legal experts with relevant experience are encouraged to apply before the deadline.
