About the Business Development Manager Role

The Business Development Manager, Africa will lead fundraising and donor engagement efforts supporting HOT’s work across the East & Southern Africa (ESA) and West & Northern Africa (WNA) regional hubs.

The successful candidate will help secure sustainable funding by developing strong proposals, managing donor relationships, identifying new opportunities, and strengthening HOT’s fundraising strategy.

The role requires an experienced professional who can communicate the impact of open data and digital technology in humanitarian action and international development.

Key Responsibilities

Donor Relationship Management

The Business Development Manager will:

• Identify and track funding opportunities from foundations, bilateral organizations, multilateral institutions, and partners.
• Analyze donor requirements and assess alignment with HOT programmes.
• Develop donor engagement strategies and funding approaches.
• Build relationships with donors and implementing partners.
• Support regional teams in developing funding opportunities.
• Maintain a pipeline of potential funders and partnership opportunities.
• Prepare donor materials, presentations, and engagement documents.

Grant and Proposal Development

The role will lead the development of funding applications by:

• Coordinating complex grant proposals and bids.
• Working with technical and operational teams to gather information.
• Writing, editing, and reviewing compelling proposals.
• Managing proposal timelines and submission processes.
• Improving organizational grant-writing systems and practices.
• Tracking applications and collecting donor feedback.
• Maintaining grant calendars and reporting systems.
• Preparing accurate interim and final donor reports.

Collaboration and Communication

The position will also:

• Build strong relationships across HOT teams.
• Support knowledge sharing between regional teams.
• Strengthen fundraising skills through tools, training, and resources.
• Stay updated on fundraising trends and best practices.

Required Qualifications

Applicants should have:

• A bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
• At least 5 years of grant writing experience.
• Proven success securing funding proposals ranging from $250,000 to $1 million+.
• Excellent writing, editing, and research skills.
• Knowledge of international development and philanthropic funding trends.
• Strong storytelling abilities for fundraising and advocacy.
• Experience managing multiple deadlines independently.
• Strong communication skills across diverse cultural environments.
• English-language fluency.
• Professional French proficiency is highly desirable.

Candidates with experience in database management, including knowledge of NeonOne, will have an advantage.

Preferred Experience

HOT is especially interested in candidates who have:

• Experience with African philanthropic and donor landscapes.
• Knowledge of grant management processes.
• Experience working with nonprofit organizations.
• Understanding of open mapping, open data, or geospatial technology.
• Ability to develop strategic partnerships.
• Willingness to travel when required.

• Full-time employee role (32 hours per week).

• Compensation of up to $72,300 USD, depending on tax location.
