Role Summary
Reporting directly to the CEO, the Director of Strategic Communications serves as the organization’s senior communications leader. This individual is responsible for shaping GovAct’s brand, managing its public image, and building communication strategies that align with its mission and goals.
The role requires a balance of high-level strategic thinking and hands-on execution. The successful candidate will work closely with leadership, manage media relations, oversee digital strategy, and ensure consistent messaging across all platforms and partnerships.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Communications
- Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy.
- Advise the CEO on public positioning and thought leadership opportunities.
- Support fundraising initiatives through targeted messaging.
- Identify opportunities to enhance organizational visibility and influence.
Media Relations & Public Affairs
- Draft press releases, op-eds, and media materials.
- Build and maintain relationships with journalists and media outlets.
- Manage speaking engagements and media appearances for the CEO.
- Act as a spokesperson when necessary.
Digital Strategy & Content
- Lead digital communications across websites, social media, and newsletters.
- Ensure consistent messaging and branding across all channels.
- Use analytics to refine and improve communication strategies.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
- Work closely with Governors’ Offices and alliance partners.
- Align communication strategies across multiple initiatives.
- Support Alliance Directors with messaging and outreach efforts.
Internal & Crisis Communications
- Ensure clear internal communication across teams.
- Develop crisis communication plans and manage responses.
- Provide communication training and resources to staff.
Team Leadership
- Manage and mentor communications staff and consultants.
- Build and scale a high-performing communications team.
- Oversee external agencies and ensure alignment with organizational goals.
Required Qualifications
Candidates are expected to bring a strong background in communications and public affairs, along with leadership experience. Key qualifications include:
- 7–10+ years of experience in strategic communications or related fields.
- Experience in political, advocacy, or government communications (preferred).
- A bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, political science, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of policy areas such as public health, democracy, and reproductive rights.
- Proven ability to develop and execute communication strategies.
- Experience advising senior leadership and managing high-stakes messaging.
